I'm setting up google drive to experiment with backup up servers to our GAFE unlimited storage. I know the PC/Server version of google drive will not work with authenticating proxies, so I'm set IE on the Windows Server to use our unauthenticating proxy, which is working fine (browsing etc)

Problem is, when I try to start google drive, I simply get and error saying it could not connect to the internet. You don't seem to get any options for configuration etc (preferences is greyed out), so I'm a bit stumped. Does google drive just not work with proxies at all?

I've not tried this, but have you added the relevant sites to your filter ? In Smoothwall you would possibly need to add these to the no authentication list ?

On our smoothwall, the unauthenticated port gets a specificed user access - for which the GAFE domains are all whitelisted. It looks like the drive application isn't even seeing that a proxy is in use. I've tried Server 2008 and 2012 but both do the same thing.

Shame really as I was hoping to trying and use this as a cloud backup.

If you right click on the Google Drive system tray icon and go to preferences you get the following Proxy options:

You could try selecting the Auto detect option which then should pick up your IE settings.

Problem is, the preferences option is greyed out! I'm not sure why.

This usually happens if the account being used has not been logged in correctly or the program has no account details. If you just click on the icon what happens? Do you get a prompt to login?

Nope, the icon is greyed out, and right clicking it only gives me the About/Preferences/Quit options - and preferences is also greyed out. I can't find anyway to add login details, or even change the settings.

Are you using the Chrome.admx template in Group Policy?

If you are, expand Google > Google Chrome > Proxy Server and see if changing/updating this influences Google Drive.

We do use Chrome policies but the logged in user doesn't get a chrome policy (i.e its an admin, and the policies are applied to staff & students)

So I'm presuming you're still configuring proxy settings via Group Policy for IE? Even for admins? I'd try and configure them for Chrome too, just to eliminate any other conflict.

Admins do get proxy settings through policy, although they can change them manually. I've even uninstalled chrome, and its made no difference - so I don't think Chrome is even needed for google drive.

The only other suggestion is to work out what registry settings it uses and attack the problem that way, but as you say, you shouldn't have to do that.

I've had a poke around the registry but TBH google drive seems to put very little in there, in fact I can't seem to find where it stores its preferences!

I'm still trying to fix this - tried on Windows 7 and 8 and the damn thing just tells me it can't see an internet connection!

I can't open the preferences as its greyed out - this is bizarre. Has anyone found a way to get this working behind a proxy?

I have the exact same issue (running Windows 7 - 32Bit). I think this is part of the design of the new version of GoogleDrive. The desktop app used to connect through my authenticating proxy server, but now it doesn't. I can't access preferences (grayed-out) and there don't appear to be any useful diagnostics or configuration parameters accessible.

I uninstalled and reinstalled drive, but same issue.

It's obviously very frustrating, since it doesn't work and there's no way to reset it or figure out why it's failing.
