I'm starting to get more HD videos that customers want putting onto DVD. Nobody has asked for Blue Ray yet but I'm starting to look into it. Remembering the early days of DVD burning where "coasters" were the norm, I'd like ti try and avoid it this time around. Ideally, I'd like an external drive to start with I can live with an internal one, if that's the better option.

Can anyone offer any advice on the best options and anything to steer clear of?

Thanks

Internal drives are faster than external are also a little cheaper.

'Coasters' were avoided using decent media, I was a fan of Ritek dye when I used to burn lots.

There aren't to many blank blu-ray media manafacturers at the moment so you should be ok.

Don't buy any LTH BD-Rs if you can.

Avoid Blu-ray LTH discs for data archival

Optical discs are known for degrading. The chemicals used in optical discs are unstable and therefore the discs become less readable over the years. A French study in which several Blu-ray recordable discs were tested reveals that it makes a lot of difference on which discs you store your valuable data.

The tests revealed that the overall quality of Blu-ray LTH discs is worse than normal Blu-ray (HTL) discs. It seems that if you want to store your data for a long time, these should be avoided. The researchers recommend to use normal HTL Blu-ray discs and rated those of Sony and Panasonic as most reliable.

In that case is it not reliable to use BD-RE for data backups then ?

My plan was that I could get 4 or so BD-RE discs and re use the BD-RE Discs every so often to create a new backup by either adding items to the backup disc or over writing it completely and thus making a new backup disc so I don't up with hundreds of record only blu ray discs of backups as didn't really want to keep buying blu ray discs ( as in recordable ones )

Rewritable discs are generally less reliable than write-once discs.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Optical_media_preservation#Damage_to_optical_discs

RW and RAM discs' data layers are composed of a phase-changing film that is even more sensitive to heat than the dye found in R discs, so that they degrade even faster when subjected to ambient heat or direct sunlight. The phase-changing film in RW and RAM discs is not light-sensitive, and UV rays do not affect the optical properties of the film. After being exposed to freezing temperatures a disc’s separate layers may warm at different speeds, causing separation of the layers. If heated or cooled significantly a disc should be allowed to return to room temperature before use.

However, I wouldn't worry about it too much since if you are backing stuff up properly you will have the data in multiple locations anyway. :)

Panasonic's BD-RE discs are meant to be good: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/281578834824

Note. BD-RE discs can only be written at 1x or 2x speeds so to write 25GB would take ~47-95 minutes.

Thanks for the advice so far. Has anyone noticed any good buys for the burner itself. I don't want to spend more than necessary. I'll probably be using Imgburn if I can.

Never had any other make of drive other than pioneer myself so can't really comment. Got the bdr-209ebk on pre order from aria. There is the 209-dbk which is oem and afaik can't do three or four layer burning but don't think thats an issue

Over to @Arthur or someone else

Thanks. I assume that if I go for the OEM one then imgburn will do everything I need?

Yes - ImgBurn has always worked on drives I have had

Just as long as you buy reasonable media so no cheap non branded stuff

I normally go with tdk / panasonic or sony

Snippet from this site

http://club.myce.com/f61/pioneer-bdr-209dbk-vs-bdr-209ebk-337253/

The M-Disc website has a list of compatible devices: http://www.mdisc.com/m-ready/ ... So BD media is a yes, DVD media is a no with recent Pioneer drives. The EBK is not exclusively listed, but if the DBK supports it, and the XJ supports it, the series in general should support it.

DBK versus EBK: The only real difference is the DBK doesn't support writing to BDXL (3 layer and 4 layer BD media), EBK does support BDXL media. (Note: only 3-layer BDXL media is really available, but is rare). Both drives support all the same other types of media and share the same features otherwise.

Used to be one other brand but I can't for the life of me recall it's name

You definitely can't just go by brand. For example, a lot of TDKs BD-Rs are rebranded CMC discs.

The reflective layer on some well-known brands of discs will start to deteriorate after a couple of years so you have to be careful which ones you buy (see the article above). :)

I need printable discs so I'll need to do a bit of researching into the best ones to get.

The MyCE forums would be a good place to check or ask about that.
