Replacement UPS ... halp!

Afternoon all,

 

Got called into school yesterday as 'nothing works' and 'the servers making a loud beep'. Turns out the UPS powering our infrastructure has gone kaput. Huge noise when powered up and cuts out within a few seconds. For the time being I am running it off our Servers UPS but would like to get something sorted longer term incase that goes.

 

The device we have is a 7 year old APC Smart UPS 2200XL with an additional battery pack (also 7 years old). The additional batteries, as far as I am aware, are fine and functioning (last time we had a power outage they kept things going for a fair chunk of time).

 

Now to my question. As these are no longer available do

 

• I source a second hand 2200xl or 3000xl in decent condition for a few hundred quid (and hope for the best) or
  
• consider the current batteries EOL and looking at buying something new (although realistically we will not be able to pick up anywhere near the same battery capacity given what funding I am likely to be able to throw at it).
  

 

Any suggestions would be gratefully received!

Has the UPS failed or is it just an end of life battery causing the problems? We have a UPS that's a couple of years older than this on at least its third battery.

no, its the actual UPS unfortunately. I would guess so at least as power should be going through it when plugged in... no? Also, it only cuts off when something is actually plugged in at the back.

Yes it should still power the load via mains even if the batteries are dead/removed/disconnected

They sorted me out with some MGE batteries and got me out of a fix quick smart - even after the original supplier tried to suggest the UPS was duff.

It's worth getting hold of APC (i.e. Schnider Electric) directly for advice - in my experience, their support has been very good, and they'll probably be able to help you diagnose the problem. They replaced our UPS when it malfunctioned (there was a loud bang, and smoke came out the front), even though it was actually out of warrenty, although I'm guessing at 7 years old your device is more out of warrenty than ours was.
