RichCowell Posted January 5, 2006 Posted January 5, 2006 It doesn't rain but it pours Just back in after the Christmas break, Raid alarm going off The Disk's finished rebuilding now, and all appears to be fine... However, there are 4 services that won't start at startup, and won't let me start manually: The World Wide Web Publishing Service service terminated with the following error: An attempt was made to reference a token that does not exist The Network News Transport Protocol (NNTP) service terminated with the following error: The system cannot find the file specified. The Simple Mail Transport Protocol (SMTP) service terminated with the following error: An attempt was made to reference a token that does not exist. The FTP Publishing Service service terminated with the following error: An attempt was made to reference a token that does not exist. Noone can access my room bookings site now, which is causing rather a lot of arguments Tried looking at IIS with the following result: Error connecting to whsdell: The handle is invalid. Do you wish to continue to attempt to connect to it in the future? Please someone help? I'm going to play about a bit and see if I can sort it, but if anyone can suggest something, I'd be happy to hear about it. Rick
GrumbleDook Posted January 5, 2006 Posted January 5, 2006 Have you tried uninstalling each service one by one and then removing IIS, followed by adding it back bit by bit (ie no ASP to start with?) It sounds like one of the scripting shells is up the spout. IIRC this is down to an invalid registry entry for the shell in the application functions bit in the registry for IIS. The exact problem I saw was one a BizTalk server (don't ask ... an experiment gone wrong that I was asked to salvage) and the removal of services and IIS and putting it back on solved it ... Give it a go ... what is the worst that could happen? erm ... I'll get my coat. (backup the machine, the registry, the whole flippin' school, yada, yada, yada!)

GrumbleDook Posted January 9, 2006 Posted January 9, 2006 start > settings > control panel > add / remove programs Add / remove windows components > Application Server (hit the details button) > asp.net Then also select Internet Information Service (IIS) and hit details. WorldWide Web Service and hit details again Active Server Pages. Click ok and it'll pull the required files from the original CD or from a location that has the files (eg c:\i386) HTH

There aren't any details under WorldWide Web Service either :s ASP.Net is in services, but won't start due to a logon failure... I'm on Windows Server 2000 by the way, not sure if that's different from 2003. Rick

RichCowell Posted January 17, 2006 Author Posted January 17, 2006 Yes, tried rebooting the original services I had a problem with are fine now, it's just the ASP, so I can't get access to the WUS and I've had to change all my intranets etc lol It's been suggested that I should upgrade to Server 2K3, which I'm thinking of doing, though to save disruption I'll have to put it off until half term. just one of those things I guess lol
