Having friends and family in the fire service I am only to aware of the dangers caused by fallen cables in fires and the dangers that it can cause a firefighter, hopefully this legislation will prevent the a repeat of Shirley Towers (Southampton) and Harrow Court incidents. Not particularly nice hearing of things unfold on the night of Shirley Towers and having friends involved in the incident. Just take it in to consideration when running cables, there have been big changes within the fire service following Shirley Towers and steps to prevent cable entrapment have been put into place also including training simulators to help in an event like this. Please bear it in mind when having any work done, its still fresh out so not everyone maybe aware but its just a heads up. 1
ozydave Posted January 17, 2015 Posted January 17, 2015 Wow that would have been my old school with a lot to change. Plastic trunking everywhere it was the only thing holding the place up at points. If it saves live and I'm sure it will its got to be good

I'll check that. All that not withstanding, it would be churlish and possibly negligent, if anyone were to use plastic trunking in fire escape routes from now on regardless of what sort of cable they are installing. It should apply to data cables, they are just as hazardous in this situation. I suspect it isn't retrospective too. This has ended up in wired because I couldn't decide where it went. If anyone has a better idea, please let me know!
Andrew_C Posted January 17, 2015 Posted January 17, 2015 What I meant was that BS7671 is only (mainly) concerned with mains wiring. Unless data wiring is added as a whole new chapter from this update.
