My MacBook isn't very well :-(

Afternoon all,

 

We have 1 solitary Macbook Pro in school and I want to give it a fresh install of the OS. So I've followed the instructions in the link below

I've reached the end of point 6 without problem, however now I'm stuck....I've tried various button presses and get different results be they flashing folder icons, error messages (-1007f), stuck on the apple logo. Currently it has an image of a spinning globe and the name of my wireless network on it....but it's been like that for about 12 hours now :-(

 

I've got a disk for OSX Snow Leopard which is what I want to build from (although I will happily rebuild from anything at this point).

 

Any suggestions?

I believe its trying to access the internet to help build the OS. Seen this once, from what I can recall, if you have any authentication needed for your network you are going to need it bypassed with its IP. But you should, seeing you have a OSX disc be able to access disc utility, and repair the HDD from there?

 

Sorry bit vague, trying to remember from my experience of that screen.

 

edit: Yea I does look from that Apple guide its being prevented internet connection somehow. As said before if you need authentication, try and get the IP bypassed, otherwise, take it home and use home network??

Unfortunately, many of the best recovery/install processes for Macs involve having another Mac - you can do things like download Yosemite to a USB stick and download from that.

 

The screen you're showing sounds like the netboot screen. No point leaving it sitting there.

 

Look at this, specifically how to boot from DVD (hold C when turning it on)

I've tried most of those key presses. I'd pretty much come to the conclusion before @danmoly posted that I'd need to take it home to get round the proxy. will take it home tonight and cross fingers!

Not sure which model (or age) of MacBook it is but if you have a compatible installer disc you put it in the drive and startup holding down Alt. This will get you to the startup manager and let you select the DVD as the boot disc.

 

You need to make sure you are installing an OS the same or higher than the one the Mac originally shipped with. If it is a newer Mac that shipped with 10.7 etc then it won't boot from the 10.6 disc.
