PHP programming

Hello,

 

I would like to learn to do some programming and I think I'd like to start with PHP. My goal for a first project is to build a simple web based internal job logging/ticket system (nothing too complex) to implement in some of my primary schools as it is something that I could start off simple and develop as I learn.

 

I haven't really touched programming before so as a complete beginner can anyone recommend any good books/resources for learning PHP/mysql?

w3schools online is a cheaper starting point, and perhaps less intimidating, if you want to take baby steps before committing to the purchase of a great red doorstop. PHP 5 Tutorial

 

I use EasyPHP at home for developing on my PC without faffing around with web servers etc., it's an easy way of installing PHP on your Windows machine: EasyPHP | Install a local WAMP server : PHP 5 VC9, Apache 2 VC9, MySQL 5, PhpMyAdmin, Xdebug and Modules on Windows XP/Vista/Seven

If you have had any experience in programming before it is a very easy language to learn, I used the Lynda.com php + sql and learnt all I needed in a couple of nights. You will also need to know a bit of HTML + CSS.

I second the wrox books, I am currently using the beginners guide to asp.net 4.5.1 in C# and VB to learn C# and I have learnt loads from it. Like you I am planning to create a helpdesk/ticket solution for my primary schools, but I am also planning on adding Inventory system and other things into it. So would be interesting to see how yours turn out using PHP
