Please check my basic list for adding a 2012r2 DC to a 2008r2 domain

At one of my primary schools I will be introducing a 2012r2 DC to their 2008r2 domain. When I went from 2003 to 2008r2 I created a check list (listed below) and wondered if much has changed or if this is the correct order.

 

 

run dcdiag and netdiag

 

Check domain & forest functional level

 

adprep /forestprep and /domainprep

adprep /domainprep /gpprep

 

DCPROMO

Check replication

run dcdiag and netdiag

 

Transfer the FSMO roles

 

Setup time service

 

Setup DHCP

 

Demote old server

 

Raise domain & forest functional level

I've only done this once, but this looks like the procedure I went through.

 

There was a technet article on doing it that I followed, but a quick google is not yielding anything that looks like it.

Hi,

If the DC is going to be serving DNS request then just need to add the IP to DHCP? I've just introduced a Server 2012 R2 into my 2008 domain and it went through with no problems. I used the Server Manager Add roles feature, added the Active Directory Domain Service Role, let 2012 install it then used the option to promote the server to a DC through there. All went through with no problems (so far).

All looks good, however this part

 

 

adprep /forestprep and /domainprep

adprep /domainprep /gpprep

 

is done automatically when trying to promote the first 2012 R2 DC.

 

You can of course take the belt and braces approach and do this manually before hand

So if I have understood there are 2 changes since server 2008r2

 

1 - Do not run DCPROMO as using server manager is standard

 

2 - No need to adprep .... as this is automatic now.

 

Am I right?

That's correct. However using server manager installs the ADDS service, you then need to click the flag at the top of server manager to provide further configuration, then this essentially takes you to the DCPROMO screens

 

Also you don't need to run the adprep as stated, but we did run this separately just so we could be confident what was happening
