No AirPlay in school

We have no AirPlay in our new school building. We did have it in our old building, and when we transitioned across the old and new sites. I am not sure when we lost AirPlay, but we have had a completely new network (wired and wireless) with new Enterasys switches and wireless APs and controllers, all from NetConnection. So far they haven't been able to fix this.

 

So I have come to appeal to you! Can't get AirPlay between iPads (iPad2), or between iPads and new unused Apple TVs (yes they are proxy configured and on the same wireless network and can get internet), or between iPad and laptop with Reflector.

 

I enabled multicast in the wireless controller under instruction from NetConnection yesterday and it didn't improve things....

I'm sure that you've already checked this but: Are the Apple TVs and iPads on the same subnet or are you using a Bonjour gateway to get the traffic between subnets?

Yes they are on the same subnet. Not using a Bonjour gateway. We have 3 Apple TVs and 68 iPads, together with one MacBook and 100+ Windows laptops.

I be straight with you I'm not familiar with 'Enterasys'.

- A number of wireless systems have the ability to block wireless client to wireless client traffic. This is more commonly used on public hotspots but I found a school with it setup mid last year. I'm sure you've already checked it but thought I'd ask.

- Are you sure that the equipment isn't setup to block multicast traffic?

- What kind of reporting is available on the system? - Can you see the bonjour traffic created by either the PC running reflector or the AppleTV?

We also recently switched to Enterasys APs and use AirPlay with iPad 2's, Apple TV's, and Reflector. Are you sure you're in Cambridgeshire?

 

Enterasys hates Apple. Other than things being on the wrong VLAN, we didn't have any problems of no AirPlay. We do however have a lot of performance and reliability problems with AirPlay and Bonjour. The only thing I can say for sure at this point is that the coverage with older devices (e.g. iPad 2) is terrible compared to the out-dated Cisco APs they replaced. Your little signal icon will show full signal, but unless you're in the same room as the AP, you'll be dropping packets like crazy.

 

If you're in a situation where you can rollback your deployment and recoup most of yours costs, get out now.

 

 

 

Dear Mods: AirPlay is also used with Mac desktops and laptops. Reflector can only be used on desktops and laptops. The Mac forum is where this thread belongs.

But this thread was mainly asking about using Ipads but other than that it doesn't particularly matter and as I've moved this thread once I'm not moving it again.
