Backup & Update iPad question

Hi All

 

A teacher has brought an iPad in with iOS 6.0.1 & wants it to be upgraded to 8.1.2

 

He has a lot of data on it without a backup, stored in notes/pages/photos etc & no backup. (plus only 1GB of free space)

 

I have access to apple configurator & can do a backup with this, however can someone give me any advice whether or not this is the best way of doing things?

 

I know a straight update should work, but i'd like a backup to cover myself in case anything goes wrong.

Highly suggest a back up before you update, if space is an issue you can wipe the ipad ( after the back up of course ) and then update it and restore from back up, normally frees up a lot of space

I'm sure you can update the iPad through iTunes than OTA without losing any of your data.

 

That said, take a backup of it using iTunes and restore it to another iPad to see if it has all the data intact. If so, wipe the original iPad; update it and perform restore.

You'll need their Apple ID and password, perform a full local backup, then upgrade via iTunes 12 to iOS8.1.2. Without their Apple ID and password, iTunes won't backup purchased Apps.

I'm with @Michael, get the teacher to do a full backup using iTunes on the computer they normally sync it with. The upgrade shouldn't lose anything but its worth being extra cautious.

Cheers for the reply's. I'll be doing this tomorrow so will post the results. Does anyone happen to know if the backup saved purchased apps data? ie. Game saves etc.

Backed up and restored to a iPad, all went as expected. Thanks for your help guys.
