TLARWise Posted January 7, 2015 Posted January 7, 2015 I am currently planning on building a small server with 2TB of storage. Would I be better off getting 3 x 1TB drives and using RAID5 or 2 x 2TB drives and use RAID1? Also will I be OK using the built in SATA sockets on the motherboard (a SuperMicro X10SLH-F) or should I consider getting a hardware RAID controller (if so do you have any recomendations as there seem to be lots available at different price points)?
tmcd35 Posted January 7, 2015 Posted January 7, 2015 Given the low number of drives - 2x2Tb RAID-1 would be best. RAID-5/6 are only worth while with larger numbers of drives were capacity is more important than speed or redundancy. A for the SATA sockets. What version of Windows Server (assuming Windows) are you planning on using. Windows Storage Pools in 2012/2012R2 look like a great alternative to the motherboards hardware RAID controller or an expansion card. If you want hardware RAID I'd say, given the size, number and type of drives, then the built in RAID would be fine. RAID controller cards can be a little pricey. Still, I'd go with Storage Pools personally.
