X-13 Posted January 7, 2015 Posted January 7, 2015 You wouldn't say "Honey I'm just putting the curry in the computer would you" A gaming rig with mediocre cooling makes for a excellent hotplate. You could fry an egg on that GPU. Gaming PCs are ovens, confirmed.
sonofsanta Posted January 7, 2015 Posted January 7, 2015 I don't know as there's really much difference between PCs and consoles these days, given how many bloody updates I seem to get everytime the PS3 gets turned on. You ran Netflix fine yesterday before the update, why the bleedin' crikey do I have to do the update now before I can use it again? Cos you're blackmailing me into performing the update? How about you let me download updates in the background and install on shut down then, like every PC has done for 15 years now? As my PC is plugged into a TV and I have a wired 360 controller as well... yeah, it's basically about where the game is going to be cheapest/prettiest for me. Or if I need a mouse to aim cos analogue sticks are 'orrible for FPS.

X-13 Posted January 7, 2015 Posted January 7, 2015 Or if I need a mouse to aim cos analogue sticks are 'orrible for FPS. IIRC consoles can use m+k as well now... so the only difference between PC and consoles is upgradability and exclusives. Hopefully devs will stop arbitrarily pushing specs up for no raison... Yeah, I'm looking at you Unity.
Garacesh Posted January 7, 2015 Posted January 7, 2015 (edited) What the hell happened in this thread..? D: IIRC consoles can use m+k as well now... so the only difference between PC and consoles is upgradability and exclusives. Hopefully devs will stop arbitrarily pushing specs up for no raison... Yeah, I'm looking at you Unity. Yeah, most consoles can now as they got USB ports and stuffs. But effort. PC is for the srs bzns gaming. Consoles are for chillaxing in the front room. Different atmospheres warrant different controllers. But that does annoy me about PC's, how devs instead of optimising their games just go "Minimum specs: NASA Supercomputer" Edited January 7, 2015 by Garacesh
X-13 Posted January 7, 2015 Posted January 7, 2015 What the hell happened in this thread..? D: We worked hard all day, and finally... we got this thread off the tracks. There was a brief moment where it looked like we were unsuccessful, but we persevered and it paid off. Good job, everyone.
abillybob Posted January 7, 2015 Posted January 7, 2015 Which can only mean - are you my missus? It's been a long time coming but yes. Yes I am! Happy now!? *cries uncontrollably*
X-13 Posted January 7, 2015 Posted January 7, 2015 But that does annoy me about PC's, how devs instead of optimising their games just go "Minimum specs: NASA Supercomputer" It's the old "but can it run crysis?"... but taken to a very expensive extreme. Make me curious as to why so many games have nVidia/AMD splash screens on boot...
Arthur Posted January 7, 2015 Posted January 7, 2015 Oh, also, if you want to play Minecraft, ignore everything said and buy the fastest processor you can... It only uses a single core too, so clock speed is important too. I've seen i7s struggle with large mod-packs. OptiFine can double/triple the FPS in Minecraft so that's definitely worth installing too.
edutech4schools Posted January 8, 2015 Author Posted January 8, 2015 Bad news for my PC build this morning as our fence came down during the night. I reckon it's going to cost £400+ to get fixed. Which leaves me with £300 ish. I have a few options. Go down the PS4 / Xbox1 path or start to build a PC rig but in the knowledge it will not be running any time soon. As you can guess I am not feeling very happy today.
JRowley Posted January 8, 2015 Posted January 8, 2015 My advice would be to get a console and start saving for a gaming pc at a later date, otherwise you wont have anything for another year or more.
Sunnyknight Posted January 8, 2015 Posted January 8, 2015 Do Not Buy A Console Save up part by part for a top end rig. Build it. Run it. Feel the pleasure in your achievement
tmcd35 Posted January 8, 2015 Posted January 8, 2015 PS4 - FTW (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-PS4-The-Last-Remastered/dp/B00I9WW9YQ)
edutech4schools Posted January 8, 2015 Author Posted January 8, 2015 My advice would be to get a console and start saving for a gaming pc at a later date, otherwise you wont have anything for another year or more. That is how I am thinking but getting a PC did take me away from the 'Do I get PS4 or XB1' Issue.
sonofsanta Posted January 8, 2015 Posted January 8, 2015 That is properly rubbish TBH, if you still intend on building a gaming PC, but want games to play now... I'd probably buy a Wii U, because those are games that won't ever crop up on PC. Buying a PS4/XB1 is kind of redundant alongside a gaming PC, bar a (very) few exclusives. Depends on how much you love Nintendo games, though. I know I'll end up getting one at some point, for Mario Kart/Smash Bros/shiny-new-Zelda, but if none of them interest you then it'd be pointless.
Joanne Posted January 8, 2015 Posted January 8, 2015 Buy a used console... cheaper and you be able to save for a PC later. Scan the facebook buy and sell pages. There are always bargains to be had. We picked up Assassins Creed: Black flag still in the cellophane and a brand new PS4 controller for £35. OMG!
Garacesh Posted January 8, 2015 Posted January 8, 2015 (edited) Bad news for my PC build this morning as our fence came down during the night. I reckon it's going to cost £400+ to get fixed. Which leaves me with £300 ish.. Ooh-err bummer. Going to be rather difficult on that budget. Rather than start buying things bit-by-bit now, I'd suggest staying on the "I'm going to build a PC." route, but just save up until you have £600+ again. This little fence hoo-hah stands (heh..) testament to how easily accidents can happen. You don't want to spend the £300 you have left on bits only to have your washing machine set on fire, do you? If you're able to save money (and not one of those that spends every penny they have just because they have it) then there's zero reason to build it bit-by-bit. It won't net you a working PC any faster. And prices will likely have fallen a bit for better kit by the time you come back to it. Even if it's only an overall saving of £50.. Fifty quid's fifty quid, right? Edited January 8, 2015 by Garacesh
Theblacksheep Posted January 8, 2015 Posted January 8, 2015 For the price of a graphics card you can play 2 awesome games and watch dogs. I have enough PCs to look after.
Joanne Posted January 8, 2015 Posted January 8, 2015 you can play 2 awesome games and watch dogs. LOLZ! Like it.
Arreks Posted January 8, 2015 Posted January 8, 2015 (edited) I don't really have any idea what's going on in this thread anymore. Hopefully devs will stop arbitrarily pushing specs up for no raison... Edited January 8, 2015 by Arreks
edutech4schools Posted January 8, 2015 Author Posted January 8, 2015 I have gone and done it and ordered a PS4 The bundle was GTA V, DriveClub & The Last Of Us for £339 from Game which is a good deal. Apologies and thanks to everyone and especial @Sunnyknight who will be muttering obscenities about now. My plan is to Play the PS4 for a while and start saving from scratch for a PC. 2

Good little bundle - add me if you fancy starting an Edugeek club on Driveclub (I started one but nobody was joining!) - TeknoVikingJosh TLoU is a fantastic game, first in a while that really deserved it's many accolades IMO And GTAV is absolutely gorgeous
