Koldov Posted December 23, 2014 Posted December 23, 2014 (edited) Hi All, Firstly may I say welcome back EDUGEEK! I missed you, hope all is good now and hope you all have a good festive seasons holiday.... OK as the title suggests I'm having trouble with this wireless card in an HP 620 laptop. A quick Gooooogle suggests it an extremely widespread problem, but this just seems a little strange! I have had problems in one form or another with most of these laptops and their wireless quirks. Some were solved when it wouldn't turn on the wireless (just an orange light not responding to the wireless button being pushed), by unistalling and reinstalling the card. Sometimes just running the Windows Network Troubleshooter reset the wireless adapter, sometimes installing the HP Wireless Assistant helped, giving me the message that wireless was turned off in Windows Mobility Center (a setting that didn't exist before the HP Wireless Assistant was installed)... There is also a quirk where you cannot turn off Bluetooth without turning off the wireless, and turning on just the wireless enables the Bluetooth again! But this one has had me going round in circles for days!!!! A teacher brings her laptop to me, no wireless, ok no problem... Do all of the above and thought it would just pop back up. But this one was different, it didn't even appear in Device Manager! I pulled the card and reinserted just in case she'd dropped the laptop and it had come loose, but no difference. Never seen a wireless card die, but I guess it can happen, so I got another card and here is where it gets weird.... Windows can see the card, the card can see all the wireless networks - It just refuses point blank to join any! I've wiped the laptop, reinstalled windows just in case it was a driver install gone bad, but to no avail... Tried about 4 different HP/RAlink drivers and it's still just sitting in there refusing to join, as usual without any helpful error messages - it's like it is on another channel or just slightly out of phase or something. It's a bit like this thread: RALink RT3090 on laptop HP 620 detects wireless networks but... - HP Support Forum - 4563582 He didn't get much help, just the usual "Have you tried the manual" ... I've done pretty much all the troubleshooting/resetting/reseating/driver install/driver uninstalling that I can, so I hope someone here has a solution! "http://xkcd.com/979/" I feel your pain bro... 10101010 Posted December 23, 2014 Posted December 23, 2014 Have you upgraded the bios, I had a few hps with ralink cards in and had a number of random problems dropping wireless etc, nothing resolved it until they finally released a bios fix a few months later. Might be worth a try.
Koldov Posted December 24, 2014 Author Posted December 24, 2014 Yeah tried updating the bios before I posted, just in case. I've even just installed Win 7 Enterprise x64 as I've seen in another thread. The Goooogle hits on this problem are overwhelming! Just don't get it, why Windows can see the adapter, the adapter can see the networks - It just refuses to join!
