Weird WIFI

Hi!

Bit of a weird problem, hoping for a next step.

 

Been battling with an old Trapeze wireless system at school. Works fine for one or two users but as soon as you get a class of thirty, it begins to tumble and log on times begin to climb and climb from 20 seconds, to a reported 20 mins (allegedly.). Sometimes users are logged on and working and their profile just drops out and they lose all their redirections.

We have a Vanilla Win7 network with multiple DC's.

Wired network is fine and works well on heavy load.

Things I've tried etc:

 

1. Wireless timeout : has reduced the 'no logon servers' count and pushed all GP's out nicely.

2. Tweaked wireless channels : gave it a shot and it's not helped.

3. Reduced local profiles stored on machine: Helped in a situation where only 1 or 2 laptops are involved.

4. Checked switches: traffic is low to nothing when 'slow logons' exist.

5. Checked AP's & Traffic: Next to nothing, barely climbs past 10mbits on the graphs.

Clients equally spaced between wireless radios (IE: 5ghz, 2.4ghz)

Next to no errors or re-transmits.

 

6. Laptops: Happens across broad range of models - Tried tweaking Card settings on multiple machines with no performance change.

7. Location: Happens across school, can happen at random on teacher machines but mainly happens in bulk on classroom laptops.

8. Server: Is on a virtual XP machine. CPU is fine, memory is fine..machine barely does any work!

9. Network: There are no VLANS in place. There are 3 SSID's in use.

 

I'm not majorly knowledgeable but if there are any extra steps I can take or suggestions anyone has, please help because we are totally out of ideas now as to the next step and its a very long time till any new wireless solution is implemented.

Maybe it's time to replace.... We recently moved away from a managed Netgear system (which constantly had problems like what you said above) to Unifi. Since moving we've had no issues at all and it wasn't too expensive either.

I wonder if it is just the age of the system? Could be the hardware getting old!

Trapeze has its limitations. Give switchshop a call, they've got a guy who knows a lot about it. If you are prepared to be patient (and pay) he can come to site and work magic. Edited December 14, 2014 by psydii

Given that Juniper bought Trapeze circa 2010, the hardware is all now legacy.

 

What's the uplink speed controller side? Also the WAP capability will play a major factor.

 

Not much help, but it reads to me like it might be time to look for new equipment.
