A couple of months ago poundland were doing 1m braided lightning cables in various colours. I bought three or four. All holding up to our daily use. There were hundreds of ebay sellers shifting them for £3 a pop too.

I have found that I can only use original lighting cables with my IPhone 5c. I have tried the pound shop versions a few times but always get a message appear saying: "This cable or accessory is not certified and may not work reliably with this iphone" and the phone wont charge

I wonder if this Lidl ones will be any better

We've had this in the office today. Cheap Cable was working perfectly for three months then you get a message saying this might not work correctly.

This happens on my iPhone5 on ios 7 and my colleagues on ios 8.

Any ideas? Or did the cable just bite the dust?

It says this on the Lidl page:

MFI (Made for iPhone/iPod/iPad) certified

So I would say yes. I too have seen the cheap ones on eBay and have avoided like the plague. I'm going to grab one of these though :)

Presumably an update has been made that allows the device to identify the fake chips.

This is my theory, but with just the one knock off cable between us we don't have another to compare the result.

It's definitely not an MFI cable though as James paid about seventy pence for it I think.

Yeah the cheap ones tend to be reverse engineered chips. Some work well, others don't - some work, then stop. Glad to say my cheapy ones from the pound shop are still happily charging my iPhone 5s and iPad Mini.

After my cable started to look like it was going to kick the bucket about a year ago I bought a couple of cheap ones off ebay, so I could leave one at work and one at home, they both worked for a few weeks then stopped, I bought another one from a different ebay seller (Claiming they was compatable with the latest Ios), didnt work at all after a few days of constantly hearing it vibrate on the desk to indicate it was charging.

Spent about £6-7 on cheap cables that always throw up the "This cable or accessory is not certified and may not work reliably with this iphone" and not actually charge my phone, half way to buying one for £15 off apple haha. Should of just bought the genuine one too start with (or not got an apple phone boo).

Just a reminder that these are in today. I've picked one up this morning and the build quality is very good.

Not tried it connected to a device yet as my iPad is at home. Will let you all know later how that goes :)
