Over the air (OTA) Android update - Something I just found out and want to pass on.

I have a Nexus 5 and last week I got my OTA update. I have been having the odd issue with wifi and the camera app since updating but nothing major. Today my friend showed me something on his Nexus 5 and his phone ran much smoother than mine. Prior to using his mine had seemed fast and responsive but side be side his was just better, which is odd as both are N5's and both on Android V5

 

The only difference I could work out was I had done an OTA update and he had downloaded and installed the update himself. Doing some searching I found out that doing an OTA update does not always update all the files, some might get missed for whatever reason, although the full rom is downloaded to the phone for restores etc.

 

So I went in to the options and did a factory reset, which wipes the phone and re-installs using the current version of Android (Lollipop).

 

Be warned that while doing this it can now take up to 2 hours for Android to wipe the internal memory and you should just wait. I think its something to do with the encryption and not an issue as some forums suggest, just wait and it will install the OS.

 

Anyway my phone is is not the same phone as the one with the OTA update. The wifi issues have gone and the camera is working way better that it did before. The phone is just a better phone, not by much but by enough for me to notice.

 

Just wanted to pass this info on and hope it helps someone else with an Android device.

I did the OTA update on my nexus10 and it broke it - just showed a picture of a dead android on it so I searched for how to upload the factory image from my computer to fix it. Took about 20 minutes and then all was well with the world again. Then after a week of it prompting me on my nexus 4 I did the same upload from my computer rather than ota. Never had a problem before and I imagine I'll give it another shot when the 5.1 update comes.

 

As an aside it's the first update to android I don't like. Mostly on my phone but I don't mind it as much on my tablet (although I preferred kitkat on there too). I'm sure I'll get used to it. It's just as snappy as 4.4 was but hopefully it will turn out to be less battery draining.

What WiFi issues were you having?

 

I've got an issue at the moment with our school wireless on my Nexus 4 which it seems to connect to but then routes all traffic via mobile still as it doesn't detect the proxy properly. If I forget the network and readd it, with exactly the same settings it's fine.
