Server Reboots

I have a Windows Storage Server 2012R2 server.

 

It will run happily serving files all day long with no issues. However If you log onto the server (both with a domain account and local admin) and start to browse files on it, it will just reboot itself. In the log files it simply shows that the logged in user initiated a reboot. It has also done this when using server manager, simply reboots. Don't log into it and it runs fine. It is a very strange problem and I was wondering if anybody has any ideas.

I dont like the way Windows Updates work on 2k12. Has it installed updates and is trying to reboot?

No, Windows updates were turned off. I only turn it on when I do updates then turn it off. Even after a reboot I can make it reboot by simply browsing to files (.ie within 3 seconds of logging in)

This has just happened to me too on our 2012r2 server that is new and has been installed for just 2 weeks. Myself and a support tech from the LEA was logged it remotely at the time. Our screens froze, so I walked to the server screen which said a restart is in progress! In the logs it said that the administrator initiated a restart. I cannot understand it. Has anyone else had a recurrence of this.

 

I am beginning to miss my trusty Windows server 2003 server already. It has run faultlessly for 7 years.

Could be this I experienced it

 

A new group policy called Always automatically restart at the scheduled time enables restarts soon after updates are installed, instead of 3 days later

Interesting. However the last windows update was 7 days ago. I have other problems with the new server that I am taking up with the contractor who installed the server. The worst problems are seems to be permission problems to some folders on Drive c: that is preventing Sophos enterprise console working and saying access denied when I try and load any of the administrative tools. If I look at the folders permissions it says they have no owner. Anyway I expect the contractor to fix this and I should post thes on another thread.

Just to say Our original fault was some sort of virus..... Sophos did not pick anything up, but managed to get Vipre installed and it cleaned up the issues and we have not had an issue since.
