synaesthesia Posted November 17, 2014 Posted November 17, 2014 (edited) Ello, bit of trouble hopefully someone can help with! We have an intranet that's sitting on a 2003 server, we need shot of it. It's basically our internet home page for all users. A new one has been set up on our web server, on Wordpress which makes editing it nice and easy. The problem however is that I'd like to retain some ease of use. It doesn't matter what URL it's access from, being the home page, but I'd like users to be able to go to http://intranet and DNS will point it in the right direction. The old setup is easy; it's a windows Apache system using virtualhosts in the httpd.conf to direct traffic coming to it looking for http://intranet. That's not possible as far as I can see with wordpress as there is no documentroot that I can use - all sites and data is held in a database. Probably a matter of redirecting something somewhere, but don't know where to start! Fairly sure DNS is OK as I can get it to redirect http://intranet to the base website. soveryapt Posted November 17, 2014 Posted November 17, 2014 Ok, a few questions so I can understand fully what you're trying to do. The new wordpress site, is this on a public webserver or is it still just an internal one? Is the intranet page just a single page on a wordpress site or is it a whole wordpress site dedicated to the intranet? If it's on a public server, then I'd be pushing out the FQDN for the site to users for their home page, but then internally create a CNAME record in the DNS that would forward to the FQDN of it as well for any users that haven't yet updated. 1
kmount Posted November 17, 2014 Posted November 17, 2014 Wherever http://intranet points to on your webserver (/var/www/html or something) create an index.html You could probably do it with htaccess too but the above is cheap and easy. 1
synaesthesia Posted November 18, 2014 Author Posted November 18, 2014 kmount: great minds That exact thought crossed my mind as I lay in bed last night - just trying that now! And yes, it's an external web server which we may as well leverage for our intranet. (It's more of a portal/landing page really, nothing on there that would cause a problem being external facing, yet it's easy enough to limit access to local traffic only)
synaesthesia Posted November 18, 2014 Author Posted November 18, 2014 Bum, can't get that to work Made folder on the wordpress server /var/www/intranet (normal site is on /www obviously) Tried the following in httpd.conf on the server: DocumentRoot /var/www/intranet Servername portal and RedirectPermanent / http://www.publicurl.sch.uk/intranet Servername portal Going to http://www.publicurl.sch.uk/intranet redirects perfectly, yet going to http://portal still goes to the root website
