JJanisch Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 (edited) Hi, I've already contacted the schools' ISP and allowed communication between the networks which means that I can connect to and browse either side. Now, I was wondering if I changed the connect.ini file to point to the other schools' SIMs server, as long as both SIMs versions were the same, would I run into any major problems? I realise I could just give it a try but most of you guys seem to be 10 steps ahead of me whatever I'm doing so thought I'd ask here first! Edited November 13, 2014 by JJanisch
Steve21 Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 Johan only the VLAN inter routing was setup originally between the two. You'll have to look back at domain trusts if you're wanting nice easy access, as otherwise you'll be opening up a lot of public shares/logging in a lot lol Steve

Ok, I believe SIMs do some sort of remote access but considering this machine will have a local SIMs (rather than just a home PC) I doubt this being something they addressed. I'll look down that avenue first, but in reality it's not supposed to be a big job so if it is then there's others with more priority. Edited November 13, 2014 by JJanisch

Steve21 Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 You'd be better off giving him (assuming the obvious one) remote access on their computer, so can access it via that. Just remote between the sites, obviously need to allow RDP on the other pc but would save you a lot of hassle/security. Steve - - - Updated - - - Jinx!

You can change connect.ini settings so that you can select from multiple databases when logging in. However, the biggest issue was with networked drives...since we map our S drive to the home schools SIMS server I couldn't use any features that needed to access the guest school server and/or DMS (such as reports, linked documents, exams, nova etc) In the end by far the easiest method was to set up a remote connection. The school I connect to actually has a dedicated server for this type of thing, but some staff also remote into desktop machines over there to achieve the same thing.

Boredguy Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 I'd also recommend the remote desktop option. Less likely to cause any corruption issues as well if the connection gets disrupted for any reason. As long as you have port 443 access, you can setup a rdp gateway to save getting the grid to open up any other ports.
