SSD Advice - Looking to upgrade the space

Just sat waiting for an image to deploy to a test machine before roll out and for Yosemite to install on a school MacBook, so I thought I'd nosey about at SSDs.

 

I've currently got a 512GB Samsung 840 Pro in my MacBook Pro which is great, I love it, gave the old girl a new lease of life, but there's just not quite enough space for the various VMs I have on it these days for different schools (Parallels is lovely for building images on to deploy). So I was looking at the Samsung 840 Evo 1TB and the Samsung 850 Pro.

 

Now, other than the Warranty (3 years for 840, 10 for the 850) there isn't a great deal between them as much as there used to be anyway, as in Sequential Read is 10MB/s different and the IOPS is 2,000 different on the 4KB Random Read (QD32) and 3,000 out on the 4KB Random Write (QD1) (obv the Pro being the better of the 2). So, where as when I got the 840 Pro over the 840 Evo as it had around double the IOPS and read / writes were a lot different too, I'm just wondering if going for the Pro again is worth the additional £120 or so.

 

So, advice geeks, what would you recommend for a 1TB SSD. I've been happy with the Samsung, so will probably stick with unless there's a major argument as to why not.

personally id use a Kingston 960GB SSD SATA 6GB/S 2.5 V310, they are pretty cost effective and well made, It can have up to 450MB/S read and write speed,

that's the option i would personally use,

although out of the options you gave i believe the Pro is the better option, but it does cost more money,

if you have the money spare then go for the pro

Sure, the 850 Pro is the fastest and (likely) most reliable SSD around, due to the V-NAND. But unless you know you need the fastest you can get, or money is no object, an 840 EVO is going to be more than fast enough.

 

Personally I'd save the £120 if I was buying now. If you're not in a rush, though, the 850 EVO should be popping up sometime soon, and when it does it'll either a) be a better balance for you b) result in a fire sale on the 840 EVO.

Thanks both. I'll take a look over the Kingston specs. I know the Samsung is reliable as I already have an 840 Pro in place.

 

Might hang on a little while as it's not as urgent (installing Yosemite somehow freed up about 60GB on my SSD, so go figure! lol) and see what happens when the 850 EVO comes out.
