MrFrostmaul Posted October 22, 2014 Posted October 22, 2014 We are looking to move to Office 365 soon but have some questions that want the answers to before we move. My questions are: How does 365 Work with OneDrive and Networks. Do we store everything Local then it sync's or does it save direct to OneDrive? What would we do with a Exchange Server? - Do we really need if it is all cloud based or an hybrid environment SharePoint. - How much space do we get and how many "Intranet/Subject" Sites can we create? Licenses - How do we go about assigning and managing users in Office 365 such as leavers and new students. (Does it auto sync and remove the account from 365 once we "Archive" on our AD? or do we need scripts? Directory Sync - Can we choose Certain OU's from active Directory to sync with Office 365? Any help with answering these questions would be much appreciated Thanks
JRowley Posted October 22, 2014 Posted October 22, 2014 To address your first point, OneDrive and Network File Storage don't really play very nicely together, you can try and create scripts to synchronise between the two but there is no official support for it (as in no simple settings, tools, configuration) as of yet.
FN-GM Posted October 22, 2014 Posted October 22, 2014 One drive works the same way it does for personal use. No network sync. You can sync from a program installed on the PC, but it will need to be configured for each user. Its a bit rubbish. It depends on your requirements. Technically you don't need on premise Not sure You do this in powershell or via the GUI. If you delete it from AD it will delete it from office 365 Yes
sted Posted October 22, 2014 Posted October 22, 2014 this is just thinking out loud here based on a quick look at my personal laptop (which has onedrive setup though hotmail based not office365) it looks like it stores its local cache in c:\users\me\skydrive so in theory if i had a roaming profile (DO NOT DO THIS WITH ONEDRIVE i had a teacher who had installed it on her laptop and wondered why suite logons took ages she had a 12gb profile) it would work. The app on win 7 you can move the location so i suspect in theory you could move the skydrive folder to \\server\users$\staff\username\onedrive and it would sync ok you might even be able to write a gpp to effectively set up folder redirection for the onedrive folder but that still means that data is on your server its just on onedrive as well and as said ive not tried this im just doing it as a thought expirement. The biggest issue would be having to set it up for every user and make sure the software was on every pc (if you have office 2013 you probably have the client and it might be possible to use gpp to add some settings in for users but im not sre and its certainly not something its designed for. BUT if its just office 2013 docs they can just save in office 2013 to onedrive anyway directly in the program
MrFrostmaul Posted October 22, 2014 Author Posted October 22, 2014 Yeah, it would be nice, but it is windows and never really works how we all think fully without any problems. Found this regarding OneDrive & GPO: https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/5cd9babf-1139-451b-8860-c8fdc780e361/gpo-setting-for-onedrive-for-business?forum=winserverGP There some nice comments on there regarding this issue that alot of people are facing.
