Change Drive letter via GPO

Hi All,

 

We have a problem on-site were computers that have card readers use the H: drive for one of the readers.

We need to change this (site-wide) because we use the H: drive for a network drive.

 

The only way I can see to do this is via a .reg script to run at start up because you need to rename the value name.

In the script we will need to change the name of the key and not the value, so I believe that we need to delete the key and

add a new key with the same value.

The problem I have is that in the script it will look like this:

-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\MountedDevices\\DosDevices\D

 

The name of the value is "\\DosDevices\d".

 

Any help will be much appreciated.

When we had this issue in the past we used USBDLM: USB Drive Letter Manager - USBDLM

 

Wasn't this fixed though in Windows 7?

The best thing to do is to look at your mapped drive letter assignments and not use letters lower than you need to and thus this won't be a problem.

 

Perhaps P for Personal Drive instead of H for Home Drive?

@johnhart96, do you know what drive letter you'd like to change the reader's current H: assignment to - like Z: or something? Let me know and I'll give you a PowerShell script you can deploy on startup for the affected computers. It's just a one-liner and we're using it successfully here. Can you not just post it and highlight what needs to be changed that way you can help more than one person.

otherwise we will still be here next year if we change the drive letter.

Ben, that's simply a far too logical approach for me this morning!

 

echo h: | %{$a = mountvol $_ /l;mountvol $_ /d;$a = $a.Trim();mountvol z: $a}

 

Just change the z: to whatever you want. Change the h: too if it's a different drive you want changed; you can do it for multiple drives at once by adding more lines with the values you want.

Again many thanks for all that have helped out.

Attached is my package that I am rolling out via GPO. I thought it was best to post my results for people finding this post in the future.

In the Zip you will find the following.

• RAW program files for both 64bit and 32bit
  
• Setup files for both 64bit and 32bit.
  
• Advanced installer project files for both
  

 

to make changes to the config being rolled out just edit the USBDLM.ini inside the reverent .cab archive.
