Source: google.com/nexus/player (via Ars Technica) Alongside the expected phone and tablet, Google has also announced the first device to come with Android TV. The Nexus Player is a small, round set-top box (set-top cylinder?) that includes a voice-activated remote that will let you control your TV by yelling at it. An Asus-branded game controller, sold separately, is available for those who want to make their Android TVs into mini game consoles. Surprisingly enough, the Nexus Player eschews an ARM processor in favor of a 1.86GHz quad-core Intel Atom chip, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of storage, Bluetooth 4.1, and 802.11ac wireless. This is a minor victory for Intel, which has been fighting to get its low-power chips in more low-power devices for years now. The Player measures 120 mm by 120 mm by 20 mm, weighs 235 grams, and has both micro USB 2.0 and HDMI ports. The Nexus Player will be available for pre-order on October 16 and will cost $99. Looks like Googles Android on the TV box uses an Intel Atom, Amazons Android on the TV box uses ARM. We'll there you have it, that'll get the punters in More seriously. They seem to be missing the mark. I'd happily pay £50-£100 more to have the game controller included, a better GPU, little more RAM, and little more storage. Doesn't need to be much - we're not talking PS4 competition here, but enough to shake up the gaming market a bit. As it is a PS3 costs about the same and does more. At sub-£100 Rocku and Apple have the market pretty much sown up. Playstation TV is coming in at that price point and potentially offers more interesting functionality. The Ouya falled flat in that market. I wonder what Amazon and Google are thinking with these devices. Hell, it's getting increasingly harder to not buy a Smart TV new. Perhaps they'd do better teaming up with a Telly maker...

Tbh, I am quite interested in this, with all my content in google play and being able to watch more from it as well as third party apps itll work better than my xbox im currently using. Just want to see a list of all apps so far.

I wonder what Amazon and Google are thinking with these devices. Hell, it's getting increasingly harder to not buy a Smart TV new. Smart TVs typically have clunky, slow and poorly designed interfaces. The apps also stop receiving updates after a few years too. A 'dumb' TV + separate set-top box is a far better combination since it's cheaper to replace the box than the TV. Perhaps they'd do better teaming up with a telly maker... They are... Nexus Player isn't expected to reach Europe until next year According to the sources, it’s not that Google cannot produce enough to serve other markets, but it wants to first ensure that there is plenty of content in place for international customers before they are able to walk into a store and buy a Nexus Player. After all, no one wants a set-top box that offers very little content. Google doesn't just want to provide the usual streaming services like Netflix and Play Movies, but those from local sources as well — such as BBC iPlayer in the U.K. — the sources claim.

Ric_ Posted March 26, 2015 Posted March 26, 2015 I've had one since launch... the lack of wired networking hasn't been an issue. Allegedly you'll soon be able to use your phone as a controller which seems more practical to me (I didn't buy the controller doofer).
