How do linux on you machine

How do you install Linux on you windows machines? Are you using Virutalbox and which distribution are you using so that the Virtual disk file can be on the students home area?

Making it dual boot is the the easiest way. There is loads of info on the web - here's the first hit with two popular o/ses How to Dual-boot Linux and Windows (on a PC with Windows 7 already installed) For mounting home dirs stored on an M$ server, Samba is your friend.

I use virtualbox or even hyper-v, I just don't trust Linux on non-exact-Linux-approved hardware. I have had it hash its own file system so many times after a powercut or crash thanks to shoddy old school laptop drivers or just plain randomness.

 

Queue the Linux brigade to berate me over my experience but it stands. In a VM it is contained and quite well behaved, ESXi is also a nice Linux derivative but again on the right hardware.

Depends what you want to do with Linux. For a terminal the kids can play with, install in on anything (virtual or physical) and let them rip. If you want a gui it'd have to be virtualbox. No way would I faff around with dual-booting.
