Any ideas?

I'm hoping somebody will be able to help me with this. I've installed Windows XP onto a machine and during setup I told Windows XP that the computer is going to be part of a domain. Now the problem is I can log in using my network username and password however it doesn't seem to be fetching permissions. Also it appears that all of the files are synchronised as when I log off I get a message about synchronisation taking place. Any ideas what I have done wrong?

Is it in the correct OU in AD? If so logon and type 'gpupdate /force' in the run box then reboot the machine.

just make sure the machine is in the correct OU, rebooting the pc also forces the client to recheck the GPO's for any changes.

I'm pretty sure the computer is in the correct OU. I will try what you have suggested and let you know whether or not it works.

I formatted the computer this morning and reinstalled Windows XP. I ran the command above however that didn't make a difference. I recreated the computer in Active Directory however now it says I cannot logon because the domain controller is down or otherwise unavailable. Does this mean I need to start from scratch again?

Have you tried a different network card? or port on the switch.

Try pinging the server to ensure it can connect.

Unfortunately I cannot change the network card. The server is up and running as I can log on from other machines.

that sounds like a DNS error to me, either that or the IP address is screwy!
