blu4 Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 Hi, One of our teachers is trying to get a clock working for a web design project. I have installed java and enabled everything. All java software e.g games and so on work fine in the browser. However, when he tried to run a web page locally suddenly java shows an error and doesnt work. I have attatched a screenshot for help. Ps. He used APPLET and OBJECT to test the widget and still doesnt work. Thanks
Steve21 Posted October 10, 2014 Posted October 10, 2014 Unless they've changed it recently applets can't access local files on client, only from host etc. Else you need to do local signing and put file access in it etc. But as I said, may have changed been a while since i used java Steve
blu4 Posted October 10, 2014 Author Posted October 10, 2014 Everything is coded properly but the java disables the applet because of some permissions.. I logged on as a local machine admin and it still does not work...
Cache Posted October 11, 2014 Posted October 11, 2014 (edited) Is this CIDA? (spotted from the screenshot it is now!) I don't think we've got that far this year, last year though it worked fine for us with Java 6 installed, someone else on here had problems with Java 7 installed though - what version of Java are you using and could you test installing Java 6 on a machine to see if that resolves it? Will see if I can find the thread... Edit: Here's the other thread, different error but I'm guessing the same/similar fault: http://www.edugeek.net/forums/web-development/128646-java-applet-error-code.html A bit more googline seems to suggest you might need to look at .java.policy configuration to grant additional permissions for Java to access the files system - not looked much further then that at the moment however. Arthur Posted October 11, 2014 Posted October 11, 2014 Is there any reason the clock couldn't be created with HTML, CSS and/or JavaScript? e.g. http://neilwallis.com/projects/html5/clock/index.php http://jsfiddle.net/AbdiasSoftware/Lpu8E/ No one should be using Java applets in this day and age.
Cache Posted October 12, 2014 Posted October 12, 2014 Is there any reason the clock couldn't be created with HTML, CSS and/or JavaScript? e.g. Clock animation using HTML5 canvas Simple smooth clock - JSFiddle No one should be using Java applets in this day and age. It's specified in the CIDA Course Specification which is a pain: Web authoring software automatically creates the HTML code on which each page is based. However, sometimes it is easier to edit the HTML code directly. You will learn how to make simple changes to the code, for example to change the colour of a heading or position of an image. You will learn to understand and use hexadecimal colour codes/RGB values. You need to learn how to insert and position simple given applets (programs written in Java) into an HTML page: hit counters clocks calendars
Arthur Posted October 12, 2014 Posted October 12, 2014 It's specified in the CIDA Course Specification which is a pain: Blimey! It just goes to show how far behind the times the exam boards are.
