Disappearing (networked) Folders...

Hi All,

 

Ok, really REALLY need help with this one now!

 

I have 13 classes that log on to the domain, I have not gone for roaming or mandatory profiles and each class logs on as one user (class name).

 

They have a home drive mapped and create individual folders for themselves in that home folder to store their work.

 

Everytime they log on most of the folders they created last time just disappear before their eyes and I have even watched it happen!

 

I have deleted and recreated their user on the server and it's still happening!! What is going on?

try taking the mandatory profile away or stripping out the my docs settings in it ive had settings in there delete the contents of drives before if you also use folder redirection

That's the strangest thing! I DON'T have mandatory profiles OR folder redirection!

 

I purposefully went for the easiest option I could!

 

It should work like the teachers, who have a local profile on the machine and a mapped home drive to save work. It seems also to be only this class as no others have complained...

Ok so.... As nobody has really given me an explanation and I have spent the last week, stressed and grumpy and putting myself down as an IT technician with poor Google skillz, I have now had word from the teacher that it may be malicious!

 

I created a new logon for the class and removed all traces of their previous local profile from each of the machines... and it still happened!

 

Does anyone know the specific permission I need to tick/untick to stop them deleting folders from their shared drive and what impact will this have on creating saving and modifying their work?

It might be easier if you list the folder permissions you have in place.

the only way ive found of stopping someone moving/deleting a folder they need modify access to is to create a hidden file and then deny permissions to it. Long term I suspect youd be better giving them their own logons then they can only mess up their own stuff (and turn on volume shadow copy so you can quickly undelete stuff)

Unfortunately I've never looked into permissions as it has never been a problem...

 

They have Full Control from NTFS permissions upwards!

Just to clarify, you have 13 classes all sharing 1 username and 1 home drive?

 

If each class has say 15 students then you have around 200 students using the same username and home folder?

 

it would seem logical that someone is being mischievous and deleting folders on purpose. I suggest at a minimum you create 13 usernames and 13 different home folders (1 for each class) so you can see which class the deletions are occurring in.

I have tried the hidden file with permissions only for the Administrator, but they can still delete the folders.

You can try putting a hidden file in each folder with a ridiculously long name. This should make it undeletable.

Yeah, I think over 255 characters? Something like that.

Ok so I made it 300 odd characters long, disabled inheritance, set administrator permissions only, set it to READ ONLY and HIDDEN!

 

Seems to do the job!

 

It shows the start of the filename in the deletion dialogue, so at the start of the name I put PERMISSION DENIED! YOU HAVE BEEN REPORTED!
