IT admin's toolkit!

Hi,

 

I started my latest job around 15 months ago and I've only recently realised that something I have has become indispensable to me. I wouldn't be able to do my job half as effectively without it.

 

This , might come as a shock to a lot of you, but this thing in an iPad.

Another tablet might do, but I don't think all of the apps I use are present on either windows or android. This isn't an apple love in, I use all android stuff in my personal life, but I also don't want it to be apple hate.

 

I carry this with me all day at work, use it to keep notes, keep track of my multiple, hideously complex passwords, manage switches, check the CCTV, respond much quicker to emails, keep my tasks up to date, manage servers, change passwords.

Well, everything really, and I can do this where ever I am.

 

I'd love to put a number on it but it really has made me more productive!

I'll list the main apps and their uses for you below, please post me your most useful apps and hopefully we can compile a list of essential apps for it admins.

 

These are in no particular order, just the order on my iPad.

 

LastPass - password management, generate secure passwords (use 2factorAuth)

ExtrMonitor - monitor / manage Extreme Networks Switches

TeamViewer - manage Mac servers

Microsoft RD Client - windows severs

vSSH - telnet and ssh client

I-Rams - CCTV

Ruckus ZD Remote - monitor wifi

Word, excel, PowerPoint, OneDrive - create, share, update content

Evernote - note taking

Mail - email

 

That's the main stay of my apps, there are a few others, and the ones I use at home (iplayer, 4od, Netflix etc)

 

But I wouldn't get half the stuff done that I do without access to a tablet and the above apps.

I urge all of you to at least test a tablet for admin use.

We have a Google Apps domain here and the Admin app for that can be useful, as are the Docs, Sheets, Drive apps.

Most iPads that have been bought for teachers here have mysteriously disappeared after around 6 months. Even SLT don't bother with their iShiny's in work. Good to know that at least someone gets some productivity out of them.
