IE 10 + Windows 7 + Server 2008 (not R2) = Proxy Settings not applying!

Ok going round in circles on this one a bit....

 

I have IE 10 on Windows 7 machines, Server is 2008 (not R2) and I am trying to get proxy settings to apply, is this possible?

 

Using GPP in the pupil GPO, I have put the 3 reg edit entries as found in another post, but it will not apply.

 

Has anybody got any other things I could try or could tell me what I might have missed or be looking for?

 

The pupil PC's are massively locked down via Group Policy, so it's hard to tell if it is even getting through and my troubleshooting options are limited as there is no access to the Control Panel, Internet Options or CMD!

Oh lordy loo!

 

You could try uninstalling IE 10 from the server and then you will get the internet options GPO thing back. Then set everything in there and see if it works?

Do you have a copy of Windows 8 you can install on a spare PC or in a VM? You'll be able to install the AD admin tools on that machine and then set the GPP's from there.

The server is running IE 9, so all good there @Joanne

@tmcd35 are you saying that the GPP's I set on the 2008 server won't apply to the Win7 + IE10 machines?

Exactly, as far as I recall they need to be set on either Server 2012 or Windows 8. That could be just for IE11 though, IE10 might be setable from a Windows 7 machine, can't remember. Either way you can't do it on the 2008 server (R2 or not) directly. Once set from a valid machine then Server 2008 will send them to Win7 machines and they will apply. Go figure!

 

Edit: note, as far as I know, this is only for IE. Other GPP's should be fine. Also, don't forget to press [F5] to turn field underlines from Red to Green otherwise again they won't apply.

No, by default IE10 or IE11 GPP proxy settings cannot be set from 2008 or 2008 R2. You can't install IE10 on Server 2008 so IEM will remain, but it doesn't work in the newer browsers. Either modify the XML of the GPP policy in your sysvol (do a search on this) which will allow you to control the GPP from 2008/R2 or use a 2012/R2 server or 8/8.1workstation with RSAT to set it.

I have rolled them all back to IE9 for now... Don't judge... I am beginning to hate IT... But still thankful for EDUGEEK!!!

I know you have rolled back but if you wanted to give it another try, we applied GPP from a windows 8 pc with RSAT (on Server 2008r2 dc's) the big thing that we got caught with is when you set the proxy setting you have to press F5 on each setting (there is a red line under it after you press F5 it goes green) god only knows why but its caught us out for a while. Our settings work for IE 10 and 11 without any problems or XML editing.
