newpersn Posted August 20, 2014 Posted August 20, 2014 I'm after an idiots guide on how to do this. Our main DC's are 2008 R2, There is also a server which is a DC which is running 2012 (not R2) is there a guide on how to update the polices? we are having problems with IE but only goes to to "Windows Vista" within the internet explorer policy. Thanks
computer_expert Posted August 21, 2014 Posted August 21, 2014 Install the group policy management console on the 2012 server (it's on the features page) or edit the GPP settings as described here by duxbuz. 1
3s-gtech Posted August 21, 2014 Posted August 21, 2014 You'll need the 8.1 GPOs, grab them from C:\Windows\PolicyDefinitions and stick them in your sysvol\policies\policydefinitions folder. Your control over IE11 on Server 2008R2 will be limited to GP settings by default - for GPP you'll need to play around with some XML to get it working, get a 2012 R2 DC, or install RSAT on 8.1.

Also by coping the local GPO to the server > Will the server automaticly update with the newer GPO? If we update or add a 2012 R2 server running as a DC, Will it sort the GPP out for IE11? What about the older 2008R2 Servers? Edited August 21, 2014 by newpersn

I've just had a look on my 2012r2 server and it only goes up to IE10...however Microsoft have a KB article stating that the IE10 settings also apply to IE11. Once you have edited the IE GPP settings on a 2012/2012R2 machine, you will need to edit them on a server 2012/2012R2 or windows 8.1 machine with the RSAT tools installed as 2008R2 will display a message something along the lines of the XML file being invalid.
3s-gtech Posted August 21, 2014 Posted August 21, 2014 By copying the .ADMX and .ADML files into the sysvol\policies\policydefinitions folder, the server will automatically pick these up and show the new policy settings in Group Policy Management. If you add a 2012 R2 DC you will then be sorted for IE11 - it can indeed manage IE11 even if it only states IE10. You still won't be able to manage IE11 GPP from the Server 2008 R2 servers without hacking the XML, that's just a limitation of GPP on the older OS.
