A few thoughts on Moodle - blog post

Having recently finished (what I think to be) a pretty neat Moodle install the blog post in the link covers a few thoughts on integrating SIMS/AD/Moodle for automatic student to class assignments, Auto login, My home, Cloud storage integration (OneDrive/Google Drive/Dropbox) and Moodle updates -

Very interesting read, ties in nicely with what I'm working on at the moment.

 

I have 2 questions about the way you've done it:

 

1. For the ID field, which one did you use to pull from SIMS? Was it ID or External Id under CESThirdPartyFields, or some other field? Was it the same field for both staff and Students?

2. Was it just the way you've done it, staff choice or some other reason that you've created a course for every class? Just curious about this one.

It was person_ID from SIMS - the field is very visible for students when running reports but it also maps quite nicely to one of the External IDs for the staff (can't remember which one it is off the top of my head but if you jump into the data table for it on the SQL server its pretty easy to work out which one it is).

 

As far as making a course of every class it just seemed to be the most sensible way of doing it - after all the courses and so on are generated right from SIMS. It is purely up to the staff members as to if they use it or not though, our hope is that we will be able to drive enough of the students to 'want' to use it that they will actively encourage their teachers to join in as well!

It makes perfect sense, it's probably just the first time I've seen it done. Every where else I've seen tends to be a course per topic so it's just nice to get a different take.

 

Will see how our's progresses in new term and might adopt your approach.
