In an on-going attempt to move staff from VHS, rather than recording to DVD, I'd like them to be able to download TV content where possible. BBC's Creative Archive sounds like what I want, but the pilot was closed and there doesn't appear to have been any update for over a year. I'd like something like BBC iPlayer or 4OD but without the time limits.

Hi

Depends on what kind of budget you are looking at so some very fancy read expensive systems that some unis use. Where person logs in says record this and next day program is there in video format on a shared area etc.

But my suggestion is this: -

Same model as vhs/dvd but instead of dvd recorder but have decent pc to record program into a video file. Again someone would need to look after all this.

Then they can upload file to shared area/vle etc. But if going to do this then you need an extra license from era to store on web.

How about a MythTV box with a web front end for scheduling? Stick a couple of DVB cards in there and you could have an advanced recording system with minimal cost.

We currently use something like russdev suggests:

A windows media centre PC, running webguide, that lets users schedule recordings. We then use an open source app that re-encodes the recorded content and dumps it on a NAS so staff can watch it over the network.

I'm looking into the ERA+ licence, and our Bursar rang to get a price. Their response was "What? We're not ready to roll that out yet!" despite it being all over their web-site.

We're starting to use Click-View and apart from a few teething issues, we like it.
