Small Aircon

We only have a small server room / cupboard! and temps have been on the warm side of late. We are to get the room enlarged slightly but this may not be till next summer and I dont think fixed aircon would be on the list how ever much I would like it to be. Can anyone reccomend a small portable aircon unit that tbey have used and did it actually do the job. Our only cooling at the moment is a fan on the floor and the glass above the door removed! Does not really do much apart from move the air but its better than nothing. Got a spare server to 'play' with but cant as it generates too much heat! Currently have 2 servers and a PC running in the room.

With a portable unit you need to be able to vent the hot air but they are not rated for continuous operation and will likely fail very quickly if used in this way.

 

Fixed is the only way.

Second this. Air con went at a school I worked at and they bought in a portable unit while waiting for parts for the main unit. They really aren't very good. We had to keep on emptying the water tray every 90 minutes otherwise it would shut it self down and the heat coming out of the back almost completely negated any cooling affect the front had (although granted this wasn't helped by the poor ventilation in the room in the first place).

Thanks, that's just the info I needed. Didn't want to spend out on an air con unit if we were going to be no better off. Will have to just keep on trying to get a fixed one installed. Any ideas of the possible costs involved for a small installed version?

By the time you've found a way to get rid of the water and the hot air and found a path/surface that you can allow water to drip on ( it will! ) your better off spending real money or alternatively finding a better room!

No chance of another room, taken 10 years to get this one! They know there is an issue with heat its just what pressure can be applied to solve the issue.

Don't forget that aircon needs to be regularly maintained (to prevent legionnaires disease I believe) and this will be an additional, ongoing expense.

The sad thing is by the time it becomes a big enough issue for someone to take it seriously it will probably be too late!

We have exactly the same problem at one of the schools I work at. glorified cupboard as server room = too hot.

Although there were 2 vents installed at the top and bottom of the door the hot air just stayed in there.

We got a couple of 6" 12v ex-PC PSU fans and stuck them in the top vent blowing out and connected to a spare 12v switch power supply.

This has made a real difference and lowered the temp by around 4 degrees C - it's now around 22 on the hottest days.

Certainly a lot cheaper, quieter and dryer than aircon. If you can't get holes top and bottom perhaps you could run extractor fan ducting hose down to the floor to blow cooler air in and let the hot air circulate out the top.

We also stuck a c/heating thermostat in line to turn the fans off if the temp gets above 54 deg. C which would tend to indicate a fire and not good to be fanning the flames!

Good idea, may have to look at that as an interim option. Have got a space above the door, used to have glass in but took it out soon as we moved in due to heat. Could mount an extractor fan in there, hmmm wonder about a shower extractor fan and ducting? 😊
