Using Apple TV in school

I'm trying to set up airplay/mirroring on our proxied WiFi network. I've added a profile to the Apple TV without any issues and i can browse the internet from the apple TV etc.

But for some reason I can't airplay to the apple TV from an iPad on the same WiFi network as the TV.

 

I can only put this down to ports not being opened possibly? our internet provider if asking for source ip and destination ip.. the source I don't have an issue with as its our wifi range but what would be the destination ip?

 

I've got a list of ports that need unblocking, anyone know of any others?:

 

TCP port 123 is used to communicate with a network time server.

TCP port 3689 is used to communicate with iTunes while using the iTunes Library Sharing feature.

UDP port 5353 is used by Apple TV for automatically finding computers with iTunes on your network using Bonjour.

TCP port 80 is used for communicating with podcast servers.

TCP port 80 and 443 are used for basic and secure communications with the iTunes Store via the Internet.

TCP port 53 is used for regular DNS.

 

Any help would be appreciated!

I had a similar problem at my BSF school however it was ressolved by the wireless company as it was a configuration issue with the aruba. what sort of wireless system do you have in place?

We are a BSF school! We've got a Cisco wireless system in place at the moment, do you know what needs changing on the WiFi controller?

I think it could be the bonjour app patch if I'm not mistaken, a school very close to me had similar problems and this is what was required to bring it all together, I could be wrong mind you

 

Might be something to look for from your wireless suppliers?

Had a look around after you mentioned the bonjour issue and I've found a guide to configuring bonjour on a cisco controller, thanks for pointing me in the right direction!

I'll give this a go and let people know what happens.

Im pretty sure for bonjour to work you need to set up multicasting on the Cisco WLC. Once thats done airplay will start to work. Im sure I got it working using one of those guides.

Are there any security issues enabling multicasting over the network? or will it increase network traffic to the point where it will effect other users?

i was informed by Aruba that around 5 devices should be ok for multicasting anymore than that and you will notice the network slowwing down. and that is on a gig network as for sequrity issues i was not informed of any just to keep an eye on the network traffic.

One of my schools has 240+ ipads using internet and airplay. There may of been a slowing of the network but the ipads/appletv functionality came first. The school just has a standard Cisco Wifi network (With Wireless Lan Controller) running over mostly 10/100 POE Switches with Gigabit links back to the cabinet.

 

Updating ipads over the wireless uses far more bandwidth than airplay will ever use.

Hi there, you need to enable multicast on the wireless controller to get it to work.
