Apple Configurator for iPads

Does this program suck? Or am I just being retarded.

 

I can't for the life of me figure it out.

 

If i supervise and ipad, it will install the apps ive selected. Then i customize that ipad to how id like all the rest to look like. Create a backup from it. When i test it by adding another account to the ipad and deleted / installing new apps (as if a new user was using it) plug it in to the apple configurator program... it "refreshes" but the account is still there... the apps go back to default. Also if Find My Iphone turns on when the person using the ipad logs in wit htheir apple id, it wont restore the back up.

 

What is the proper way to setup 10 ipads that will be given to students to use as their own and then returned and reset back to a template ios?

If they are ios7+ then using find my iPad activities activation lock meaning the user needs to remove their apple Id before you can wipe it.

 

Other than that it sounds like you are doing the right things.

The issue have is when student give it back with their ID on them.

 

IS there not a work around for this?

Yes, you can raise a case with Apple support. Provide proof of purchase that includes the serial number of the iPad then they'll clear the activation lock.

So we are pretty much screwed and will have to go to apple if a device comes back and returned to the library with location services enabled and the user is gone?

Only if find my iPad is on. The other way is to make sure the students use their school email address as their apple id, then you can always reset their apple id password and access their email to recover the password. All far from ideal.

yea, thats not going to work either.

 

So i guess the libraries will have to make sure the user logs in with their apple ID and disables the find my ipad feature before leaving... yikes.

If you are using Apple Configurator and have supervision turned on, then the device will NOT activation lock. The students can leave their iCloud signed in and you can wipe the iPad without the fear of getting activation locked.

 

The way we configure our 12,000 iPads is as follows:

Supervise Device and Name

Apply Any configurations as well as Apps

-We don't use Assign to user.

 

Then when you need to refresh/wipe the iPads. Plug the iPad into the macbook, put the iPad in restore mode (Hold Home + Power, While plugged in until iTunes logo appears). This will put the iPad on the supervised tab, change Update iOS to "When device is in recovery". You then can click the refresh button and it will reinstall all your apps, and configs as well as naming the device the exact same. If you use folders for the apps at that point you would then do a Restore of your "Master" to bring back all the pretty folders.

Yes, as long as you put them in supervised mode, you can always wipe them.

Do you guys make your master back up image from a supervised ipad?

 

I was planning on selecting the supervised option, installing all the apps and wifi connection. then putting all the apps in proper folders (as that seems to be the only way to do folders) then creating a back up from that. Then preparing / refreshing all other devices from that back up
