Recovering data

My mate is at Silverstone and has just smashed the screen on his Nokia Lumia 820. He is worried about losing all of the data off the phone when he takes it back to be repaired. I believe it's a Windows based phone and that it may be possible to back up the device but is it possible without access to the screen?

Thanks, I wasn't sure if it needed anything activated on the phone first?

on a Windows phone he would surly have onedrive setup which automatically backs up all photos, contacts and such... have him sign into outlook.com and check onedrive before worrying too much.

Nope just run the phone app on PC and plug phone in.
