tj2419 Posted July 1, 2014 Posted July 1, 2014 Hi Guys I am replacing an ageing RM NAS One 2TB server using windows server 2003 set up with RAID 5. I have been given three options for a replacement all around the same price. Which would you choose for the job? WD Sentinel RX4100 WDBLVH0080KBK-EESN 8TB 4 Bay 1U Rack NAS/iSCSI SAN - WD - WDBLVH0080KBK-EESN - CMS Distribution Synology DS1513+ 15TB WD Red 5 Bay NAS - www.misco.co.uk QNAP TS-670 PRO 6TB (6 x 1TB WD Red) 6 Bay Desktop NAS (TS-670PRO/6TB) - www.misco.co.uk Requirements: Need to be able to easily change access groups and permissions on folders Accessed by staff and students across the network Going to host two shared drives RMStaff and RMShared Documents Set up as RAID 5 Have any of you used one of them on an RM network before? They work ok? Thanks
zag Posted July 1, 2014 Posted July 1, 2014 I've used Qnap before and they are pretty good. Not sure I would use a NAS on a live network though but I guess if that's what RM recommend then its the best of the bunch.

Asomodai Posted July 1, 2014 Posted July 1, 2014 Hmm, none of them has dual PSUs which is a must for me. The rack mount one can have an optional one but will cost a bomb, but only has 2 network ports. Personally I would spend a bit more for an empty Synology. Synology RackStation RS2414RP+ - NAS... | RS2414RP+ | £1,519.99 | Insight UK With this sort of thing I wouldn't cheap out on anything.
zag Posted July 1, 2014 Posted July 1, 2014 What would you use? As a place for shared drives? We use a Dell R320 with 3 x Intel 600GB SSD drives here for our shared areas. Cost was about 2.5k I believe including the windows server license.
aking99 Posted July 2, 2014 Posted July 2, 2014 We use a SAN for production storage and a NAS for backup storage. We have the Synology Rackstation RS2212+, recommendation wise, it has performed flawlessly apart from not seeming to function with xattr's
tj2419 Posted July 3, 2014 Author Posted July 3, 2014 How about this one? QNAP TS-870U-RP 8 Bay 2U Rackmount NAS Enclosure - QNAP - TS-870U-RP - CMS Distribution
aking99 Posted July 3, 2014 Posted July 3, 2014 I would expect most people are recommending by manufacturer rather than model so the previous QNAP comments would apply
tj2419 Posted July 8, 2014 Author Posted July 8, 2014 Does anyone here use a QNAP or Synology NAS as a shared area store on an RM CC4 network? Does it work ok? Also Anyone have experience at applying permissions to the folders using AD groups on either of these. Is it much more of a pain than on Windows? We have to do a fair few permission changes. Thanks
Fazza Posted July 13, 2014 Posted July 13, 2014 We've got a couple of QNAP Pro devices and they've been very reliable so far, a little slow to reboot but other than that they're OK. If you can afford it get a Drobo as they're brilliant but slightly more expensive than a QNAP and you don't get as much free space after setting up RAID as Drobo do some 'magic' and use a bit more space for even better redundancy, they restart quickly and offer brilliant perfomance in my experience.
