Intel CPU confusion

As a self confessed AMD fan for some years I've been looking to remove my rose tinted specs in order to get a better idea of what's out there and the cost>benefit relationship now available from Intel processors.

 

... except for one overwhelming problem....

 

Intel's "clever" numbering and versioning system..

 

Can someone please help by supplying some references or general tips that help with comparison between the multitude of chips.. I'm lost.

Basically, its not about clock speed anymore.

Its about how many things can be done per clock cycle.

And at the moment, Intel has the edge with their Core range, in all its variations.

If your running apps that are very memory intensive and/or latency bound, then i'd say plump for the AMD 64's. The onchip memory controller is significantely faster for latency limited situations.

The Q6600 is a cracking processor. Cheap for a quad core, but by no means slow.

Ive got one in my home pc, and wouldnt change it for anything at the moment.
