kcalderw Posted June 18, 2014 Posted June 18, 2014 I've never had to build a server before so I'm asking the experts here. I would like to integrate AD this summer with our OD server. We have a Mac Mini ready to be setup as our new OD server to replace the aging Xserve. This server will run approximately 450 users in AD. Right now we have two 1TB drives in RAID as storage for home directories. I want to increase the storage for users and add more space for backups. The applications right now that I plan to use in a VM are PaperCut and our Voicemail system. I'd prefer a 5 year solution. This server is currently what I've decided on, just want to get some opinions. I do not have the funds available for SAS drives unfortunately.
newpersn Posted June 18, 2014 Posted June 18, 2014 (edited) Is there a better hard drive. If your playing with vms. 3gbs is a little slow. 6gbs may be better with more vms. What is your budget? If you got spare. Add more ram nothing wrong with more ram. (Take that back. Didn't see the (4) Edited June 18, 2014 by newpersn
kcalderw Posted June 18, 2014 Author Posted June 18, 2014 My other option is a 1TB Near-Line SAS drive which is 6gbs. I thought 3 was a little slow as well.
synaesthesia Posted June 18, 2014 Posted June 18, 2014 A spinning drive isn't going to saturate 3GB/s....
kcalderw Posted June 19, 2014 Author Posted June 19, 2014 I can upgrade to the 6Gbps drives (1TB 7.2K RPM Near-Line SAS 6Gbps 3.5in Cabled Hard Drive) for only $80/per. Seems reasonable.
Norphy Posted June 19, 2014 Posted June 19, 2014 That would improve the reliability of the drives but it would do nothing for the performance.
