Windows 8/8.1 Deleted Printers Reappearing Multiple Times

I've just setup a new Print Server tonight on a new 2012 R2 setup - moving away from our old Windows 2003 print server, and now I'm also getting the multiple list of printers being added after being deleted, but they are all pointing towards the old print share name. The printers (at the moment) are assigned via a VBS startup script.

 

Anybody any the wiser on this issue and a fix for it? We are using a Vanilla setup and PaperCut.

Hi Matt,

 

We're currently hosting PaperCut on a 2012R2 server. The printers were originally hosted on a 2012R2 print server, but moved to a 2008R2 server. The printers reappearing point to the old 2012R2 print server.

 

Was PaperCut installed on your system previously, or has it just started to be in use?

 

I'm wondering if it's PaperCut and 2012R2 compatibility causing the issues (even then with Windows 8 and 8.1 machines running the MF Client.)

 

The PaperCut client runs for all staff, but not students. I'm going to disable it on Monday, because I don't think it affects students to be honest.

I did some digging around on the internet over the weekend and found something on another website which I've given ago this morning and so far seems to have worked...

 

On the Windows 8/8.1 machines, load up regedit and goto:-

 

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Print\Providers\Client Side Rendering Print Provider\Servers

 

Look under that are you'll probably see reference to the old server(s) which you can delete, you may also find references to the old print servers under a long number which can also be deleted.

 

You may then need to go back into the Printers and Devices and delete any printers that have popped back which will hopefully then be for the last time!

Hi Matt,

 

I've had a play with a couple of machines tonight and really appreciate the advice - it appears to be working!

 

I found, deleting the registry items, then the printers, they reappeared.

 

Delete the registry items, restart the spooler, then delete them once the spooler has started and they don't come back!

 

Cheers, I'll have a play tomorrow as well and see how we go.

I've had a go with a few machines and it seems to be working well.

 

I found, remove the key, restart the spooler, then delete the printer worked for me.

 

I'm going to set this to remove via GPP soon and see how we get on.

i joined the dark side earlier today and wrong a vb script for my 8.1 deployment... removes and present printers,printers install in seconds, sets a default and all done with no messy please wait message added onto logon time.... should have done this years ago.
