Google Apps Edu Email + Office 365 A2 SharePoint Only

We currently use Google Apps Edu for email and calending only but also wish to setup Office 365 A2 SharePoint with DirSync.

 

1. Can the Office 365 A2 email service be disabled ?

2. Will Office 365 and Google Apps Edu coexist on the same domain ?

 

Any advice/tips/notes will be appreciated.

1. Yes - you can just enable the SharePoint component under licensing. Exchange, Lync and Office applications would be disabled.

2. Yes - if you used gmail for e-mail and Office 365 for SharePoint, I can't see why it wouldn't work.

 

Is there a reason in particular you wish to use both? What does SharePoint offer that Google's offering doesn't (out of curiosity)?

Staff preferred Office Web Apps over Google Docs for Real time collaboration.

@Kamran7860 what you want to do will work, but it won't give the best experience since neither cloud service is integrated - are there compelling reasons to stay with Google Apps at all?

 

There's no specific harm in not taking up Exchange Online when using SharePoint Online, but in terms of user experience they'll have to float between two systems ... so that's two sets of credentials, two sets of sync infrastructure for you to manage, etc. etc.

Not really an issue as its a very small + the Google Apps is not currently configured for directory sync. However will review over time and see how goes. We may end up migrating email to office 365 some time in the future.
