In a random conversation earlier today, I learnt that 3 different people at school are all simultaneously yet independently considering CAD packages for producing annotated site maps - me for network mapping, the site supervisor for noting paint colours, light bulb types, etc and the bursar for recording fire extinguisher locations and such like.

So I was wondering what other people use to record this sort of information in a graphical (and ideally easily exportable) way. It might be that we fail to find one application which meets all our requirements, so each go our own way with Excel, Access or Visio, but I thought it worth asking...

Viso, with clever use of layers can provide a multi-functional plan for different requirements. Like ours, for example. The other version of that has the colours removed and the doorways/emergency exit routes marked.

Can you import images into Visio, namely the site maps which we already have, to serve as templates or would we have to re-draw them?

Yes you can put images in, but you can't edit the lines. I'd recommend using them as an 'outline' to trace around them with new, editable lines.

We have a map done in 2ddesign by our design tech which is on shared area and we have site wide licnese for 2D.

So open the file add your bits and save as new name etc leaving template in tact etc

In 2D can export as picture files etc etc
