Sony Develops 185TB Tapes

[Dos_Box]

Wow: BBC News - Sony tape smashes storage record

And still you won't have enough in 2 years time!

The capacity is impressive, but Sony don't mention what the read/write speeds are.

They've not developed the drives to do that yet I don't think! Media and devices are usually developed separately. One is pure research, the other is a development of that research.

However, one thing to note is that Sony is not just a data-tape maker. They are mostly a video tape maker. Their main tape product is Betacam/HDCAM, used by pretty much every TV station going. This sort of tape would be great for the TV and movie industry, as it would allow easy storage of things like 4k video.

It will be interesting to see if Sony starts making 4k cameras like the F55 that use the 185TB tapes rather than super expensive AXSM cards.

Perhaps the BBC would be interested in Sony's new tapes?
