Hi Guys and Girls

 

So i'm rewiring in the school theatre, because some numpty has snagged and cut the 50M VGA cable from the stage to the control booth where the projector lives. I've decided to put in a Lindy VGA faceplate and box, and got the local sparky to wire it up. Thing is. It doesn't work, and he's at a loss. Having sat down with a laptop and pinout diagrams, i've come to the conclusion is the H and V sync cables that aren't right. Thing is, as there is no common colour code for this, its proving challenging.

Its made more difficult since we can't run a 5v test using a multimeter, cos we can't get the two ends close enough, as its in a permanent trunking over the roof.

So question. What colour combinations have you come across.

The electrician has found blue and purple and this is what he has done here, but I've found and used brown and grey elsewhere.

Yeah the colour codes aren't really standard in VGA - could you not plug a long VGA cable in at one end of the faceplate long enough to give you the extra reach you need to test the pins with a multimeter?

Lindy usually uses the light blue and dark blue wire as the H & V. Can't remember which is which so you will need to try both ways. Also 50m is an extremely long run for VGA, you will be better off using VGA over Cat5.

At the other end pick one pin which is definately a ground or use the shielding and hook up the neg of a battery or psu to that and the hook the positive up to the pin which is the horizontal say.

 

Now at the other hook up and led or bulb to the ground/shield and start poking at the other wires until it lights up, repeat for the vertical.

Interesting. We use Lindy for a lot of our cable supplies and these have been the purple and blue. Mind you, our supplies may come from a different factory, being in Switzerland.
