enjay Posted April 17, 2014 Posted April 17, 2014 Does anyone know if it is possible to stop an iPad from highlighting the buttons as you press them when unlocking an iPad? We want to connect our staff iPads to the projectors using AirServer, but this displays everything, including the PIN unlock screen, so if a teacher's iPad locked during a lesson, the whole class would see their PIN as they unlock it.
enjay Posted April 17, 2014 Author Posted April 17, 2014 might be easier to train staff to disconnect from airserver or turn off projector first I'd rather find a solution! If there's something I can do to prevent this, that has got to be better than training 70 teachers, then reminding them every few months, then training any new staff each September. Plus, even with training, someone will forget, and it only takes one mistake for something bad to happen.
mac_shinobi Posted April 17, 2014 Posted April 17, 2014 Use the remote to put the projector on another input that will not show them the ipad screen , enter the unlock code and put the video source input back to the mirrored input
PotNoodleTech Posted April 17, 2014 Posted April 17, 2014 Yep or the pause/freeze/unfreeze function on the projector to freeze the blank keypad image whilst they tap their code in.
enjay Posted April 17, 2014 Author Posted April 17, 2014 Use the remote to put the projector on another input that will not show them the ipad screen , enter the unlock code and put the video source input back to the mirrored input Better, but it still requires repeated training to remind people (plus some of the remotes have gone missing). Also, one of the advantages of the teachers having iPads is that they're not bound to the front of the room; so having to go back to the desk for a remote isn't ideal, and if the teacher keeps the remote with them, they'll walk off with it at the end of the lesson! My Samsung Android devices have an option to make the unlock pattern visible or invisible, does the same thing really not exist for iOS?
Brimstone Posted April 17, 2014 Posted April 17, 2014 I don't believe it's so difficult to tell the teachers to disconnect from Airserver while typing their password into the iPad? Surely they know how to do this?
FN-GM Posted April 17, 2014 Posted April 17, 2014 I don't believe it's so difficult to tell the teachers to disconnect from Airserver while typing their password into the iPad? Surely they know how to do this? Yep but this is not what he is asking. 1

Surely they know how to do this? As I've already said, I would feel much happier with something automated. It makes things easier for the teachers and saves me time in reminding everyone and remembering to tell new staff. Also, I don't believe you CAN disconnect from AirPlay while the iPad is locked...
plexer Posted April 17, 2014 Posted April 17, 2014 There's an app for jailbroken devices that can hide the numbers but the circles are still there. Ben
Arthur Posted April 17, 2014 Posted April 17, 2014 Use the remote to put the projector on another input that will not show them the ipad screen, enter the unlock code and put the video source input back to the mirrored input Teachers won't be able to manage that. It's too complicated!
FN-GM Posted April 17, 2014 Posted April 17, 2014 Teachers won't be able to manage that. It's too complicated! To be honest is ins't practical to keep doing that.
mac_shinobi Posted April 17, 2014 Posted April 17, 2014 Contact them and make them aware of this issue and they may be able to update or add this as a new feature http://www.airserver.com/ContactUs
Arthur Posted April 18, 2014 Posted April 18, 2014 To be honest it isn't practical to keep doing that. I agree! There will be too many teachers who will leave it on the wrong input which will cause the next teacher to say their projector "isn't working" and require an IT technician to fix it.
Arthur Posted April 18, 2014 Posted April 18, 2014 Does anyone know if it is possible to stop an iPad from highlighting the buttons as you press them when unlocking an iPad? Would this work? A trick for unlocking your iPad faster with an external Bluetooth keyboard « Finer Things in Tech If you use an external Bluetooth keyboard with your iPad (or iPhone) as well as a passcode to lock your device, you don't need to slide to unlock to start the process. Just start typing your passcode on your external keyboard and iOS will figure it out. Update: Thanks to Shawn Blanc, you don’t even need to turn on the display before starting to type your passcode.
enjay Posted April 22, 2014 Author Posted April 22, 2014 Would this work? A trick for unlocking your iPad faster with an external Bluetooth keyboard « Finer Things in Tech Possibly, although it seems a dramatic (and expensive) measure to have to take! That said, many of the staff might want "proper" keyboards for their iPads anyway...
plexer Posted April 22, 2014 Posted April 22, 2014 Staff should be able to cope with any of the suggestions mentioned including switching inputs on the projector or using the freeze button as unfortunately there doesn't look like there is a native way to achieve what you want so you will have to settle for a compromise. Ben

It makes things easier for the teachers and saves me time in reminding everyone and remembering to tell new staff. Also, I don't believe you CAN disconnect from AirPlay while the iPad is locked... As I said before using control centre on the iPad to disconnect first, you can do this in the lock screen. This is a basic feature of using an iPad. if teachers can not learn how to do this then to be frank they shouldn't be using iPads in the first place... 2
enjay Posted April 22, 2014 Author Posted April 22, 2014 Staff should be able to cope with any of the suggestions mentioned They shouldn't have to "cope with" something though. Also, the consequences of them forgetting could be bad. Let's be honest, they're unlikely to change their PIN as soon as the lesson finishes if they accidentally display it, so students would be able to access their iPad if they got their hands on it later; also, the code might be used elsewhere by that staff member as well.
plexer Posted April 22, 2014 Posted April 22, 2014 I find it hard to believe that you don't think that your staff can utilize basic functions of a projector in order to protect their pins? Re-use of pins/passwords is bad, you are trying to do something that isn't possible so no matter what your opinion is you will have to use one of the suggested workarounds. Ben 1
enjay Posted April 22, 2014 Author Posted April 22, 2014 I find it hard to believe that you don't think that your staff can utilize basic functions of a projector in order to protect their pins? I am confident that 99% of our staff could manage this 99% of the time, but that still leaves a margin for error, and I would like to make things as easy as possible for people, so if there were a tick-box somewhere which removed this problem, then I would tick it. Plus, not every classroom has a remote control with the projector! you are trying to do something that isn't possible so no matter what your opinion is you will have to use one of the suggested workarounds. This is true, sadly. I had hoped it would be possible to find a hands-off/hassle-free solution for the staff, but evidently it isn't with iPad (unlike Android and Windows RT).
