BaccyNet Posted April 10, 2014 Posted April 10, 2014 Hi everyone I've just taken delivery of two new S8 appliances (well, I think they are, but I'll get to that....) and am now looking at transferring over from my current two UTM1000's. has anyone had any issues with doing this? Any 'gotchas' I should be aware of? My plan is just to restore the latest backup of each unit, fingers crossed! Regarding my first comment - the two S8 units look almost identical to the old UTM's I already have. My account manager confirms they are S8 units however everything says UTM1000 on it (even the LCD when it starts up!) might be me being picky, but I was expecting a new product, not something rebadged (or not as the case may be!) Also I thought the S8 had 16GB of RAM, but the dashboard says 8Gb. Is that right?!? Time for a holiday I think!! Steve
plexer Posted April 10, 2014 Posted April 10, 2014 Should be 16GB http://www.smoothwall.com/media/11739/UTM_datasheet_200314_digi.pdf Ben
OB1 Posted April 11, 2014 Posted April 11, 2014 Doesn't sound right. PM me your account details / Serial.
BaccyNet Posted April 11, 2014 Author Posted April 11, 2014 All being sorted next week thanks, think I was sent the wrong boxes!
AMLinington Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 In reply to your original question, you shouldn't have any trouble at all. You can create a settings archive from your UTM-1000 and restore it into the S8 - it's the same software just different hardware. I'd make sure not to keep or transfer the 'Ethernet' settings though as these are MAC specific. Passwords aren't transferred for things like directory servers too so you'll just need to pop that into the settings. The directory settings themselves and the groups will transfer just fine. 1
Simcfc73 Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 I am thinking of buying the S8 in summer when my capital gets released, I have the software version now. Is this easy too?
AMLinington Posted April 15, 2014 Posted April 15, 2014 I am thinking of buying the S8 in summer when my capital gets released, I have the software version now. Is this easy too? Yes. The Smoothwall software for Software-only and Appliances is largely the same and you can use any Smoothwall archive in any Smoothwall product. There are caveats such as the MAC addresses in the Ethernet settings (although I'm told this no longer applies following a recent update) and if you have settings for a module that doesn't exist/isn't installed in the new product then obviously these won't transfer correctly but those are pretty standard things. Guardian settings, directory settings (sans passwords), groups etc will all transfer quite happily across our entire product range.
