caffrey Posted April 10, 2014 Posted April 10, 2014 Our domain is 2008r2, I'm contemplating introducing a 2012r2 DC into the forest and retiring an old 2008r2 DC, this will be done with a VM. Has anyone done this, any tips, tricks or caveats I should be aware of before I start ?
FN-GM Posted April 10, 2014 Posted April 10, 2014 With 2012 R2 it will do a domain and forest prep itself. Once the server is prepped you can get cracking promoting it.
FragglePete Posted April 10, 2014 Posted April 10, 2014 Just done this yesterday, introduced a 2012R2 DC into my existing 2008R2 Domain. Have now retired one of the existing 2008R2 DC's after moving the roles over. All seems well so far. Pete
XiJ Posted April 10, 2014 Posted April 10, 2014 Introduced a win2k12 R12 DC to a wi 2k3 domain for the first time last week and it went just great - can't believe how easy it was. New (VM) server has had all fsmo roles moved to it. I intend to wipe and re-install the old DC - probably with win 2k8 so I have some redundancy / backup. I followed a few guides from a Microsoft bod in Canada I think it was. Very straight forward.
caffrey Posted April 10, 2014 Author Posted April 10, 2014 Thanks all, So I guess its a case of just adding the role and following the wizards
FragglePete Posted April 10, 2014 Posted April 10, 2014 Yep - I just followed this as a hand holding exercise, but really went through very quickly. Introducing the first Windows Server 2012 Domain Controller (Part 1 of 2) - Ask Premier Field Engineering (PFE) Platforms - Site Home - TechNet Blogs More happy that the old 2008 DC demoted itself with no dramas. Pete
caffrey Posted April 10, 2014 Author Posted April 10, 2014 I'll have to remember the odd bits like google sync and stuff too
