I have been trying to get my head around this for a couple of days, I think I've got it figured out then I read something that puts a spanner in the works.

When a thin client terminal accesses Windows Server 2003, would 2 types of licence need to be used at the time i.e. a Device CAL and a TS CAL?

That's how I interpreted it when looking at the Microsoft site.

So for example you've got 10 thin clients connecting to the server at the same time you would need:

10x server CALS

10x TS Device or TS user CAL?

yes, with only 10 client's you'd probably get device cals.

Also consider the cals are not concurrent - if you have 150 devices that would connect but only 10 connect simultaneously you still need 150 device cals (or if you buy user cals, one for each of user that you have)

It gets more complicated if you use device CALs for TS and then want to connect from the web... in this instance you will need an External Connector License for each externally available server.

If you are implementing a new system you need to try to decide what your aim is and how many users, devices and servers you are likely to need so that you can choose the correct licensing method.

Okay I don't actually have a system set up I was going through some scenarios.

So here's a scenario for you, this not necessarily education related.

I have 150 thin client terminals. I want these 150 thin clients to connect to 2 terminal servers running Server 2003, for simplicity sake, 75 thin clients log onto each terminal server.

I want these 150 thin client terminals to access applications via Citrix Presentation server.

What licences and how many of each from Citrix and Microsoft would you need?

There would be no external access via the web and no mobile devices connecting to these servers, all users would be based at the same place.

I've recently been reading this

http://download.microsoft.com/download/1/7/7/17745e4a-5d31-4de4-a416-07c646336d94/desktop_application_with_windows_server_terminal_services.doc

Picky doesn't even come close to the way office 2007 is licensed. Some version don't have network use rights any you have to use only one type of license connecting to the server!

"Note: Do not deploy and use Microsoft Office with Windows Server Terminal Services with the expectation to just count and license the greatest number of desktops from which Microsoft Office is accessed at any one time. The Microsoft Office licenses may not be shared or used concurrently for different desktops."

you need 150 Windows CALS + 150 Device CALS (or user cals) + 75 Citrix licenses + 2 windows 2003 server licenses.

Why only 75 Citrix licenses? As there are 2 servers and 150 clients, shouldn't it be 150 Citrix licenses?
