SQL 2005

OK - I've finally decided to do this.

 

Put the SQL 2005 CD in and it fires up but I was kind of expecting to see a box along the lines of "Upgrade" or "New Installation" - it isn't there.

 

Any ideas or step by step guide for full fat SQL 2000 to SQL 2005. I think once I've got that installed I can do the SIMS bit.

Is this for the SIMS upgrade? Are you doing a side-by-side upgrade or are you migrating over to a new box?

Thanks for the reply - it's a side by side and I think I've got SQL 2005 installed now. Yes it is for SIMS. If I can get the conversion tool released (harder than it sounds) I'm due to upgrade this week. Deep joy!

I planned to do mine this weekend and it almost slipped because despite after 2 weeks capita still hadn't officially released to us through solus the "simsqlinfrastructure" file. I did a search on the server and it was hidden away in one of the temporary setup folders

On ours it was in simsroot\SIMS\setups\c39fded9-746c-42e5-9d7e-348db8369dda - yours might have a different folder name but just do a search for "simssqlinfrastructure" and you should find it

Just looking to do the dreaded side-by-side install of SQL2005 prior to the migration and I've come across this little gem in the help file on the SQL2005 CD:

 

"2.5.12 Installing SQL Server 2005 on a Windows Domain Controller

Security Note:

We recommend against running SQL Server 2005 on a domain controller. It is possible to install SQL Server 2005 on a Windows domain controller; however, it cannot run on a Windows Server 2003 domain controller as Local Service or Network Service. SQL Server service accounts should run as Windows domain user accounts. It is also possible to install SQL Server service accounts to run as Local System, but this option is not recommended".

 

We've got Sims.Net & SQL2000 running on our DC at present ( don't laugh - it's the way the LEA set things up here :-( ). So am I buggered or do I just ignore this little pearl of wisdom?

Why don't you demote the DC and make another server the DC ?

You'll be OK - it's just not recommended. Do the database upgrade then consider getting SIMS moved onto it's own member server when you can.

@TeddyKGB - thanks for the advice - migration taking place as I type. Order going in for new Sims.Net/SQL server as well. Sod 'em they'll just have to spend the money!

Well mine's done and all seemed to go well. Took a bit of time but no real issues. Breathed a big sigh of relief when it all worked!

 

Good news is that means the rest of half term off!! Hurrah!
