* We have an old internal domain name that was provided to us by our old LEA.

* Our Office 365 Site has been created using our new external Domain Name.

My understanding is that we can't use DirSync if the UPN for the users doesn't match the Domain name added on Office 365. Can anyone confirm and what's the best way to get round this??

you simply add a new suffix upn into active directory.. (active directory domains and trusts rightclick and add the external suffix) My internal domain is "dcc-sch-4505.local" I added the "Beaminster.dorset.sch.uk" suffix in sites and trusts and made the users a upn login with the [email protected] leaving the pre2000 login alone. That simple huh? Assume it doesn't cause any other side effects or issues with e-mail or anything? I only ask because despite the external domain name not being user internally we still have e-mail accounts created based on the external domain name. Just want to be sure before I go hacking around!

I've not had any issues but we didn't use exchange before hand.

Have done a whole lot of DirSync and never had a problem with changing user UPNs. The other option is to make a change in DirSync so it replaces the internal domain with the external but it is easier to do the AD side of things.
